The Executive MBA has been designed to open up new avenues for career progression and provide new or enhanced capabilities for improved proficiency in a managerial occupation that reflects the current and emerging business environment. The programme provides businesses with candidates who possess the requisite managerial capability needed to delivery on a broad and diverse business goals.


Modules & assessment

  • Contemporary Economics
    A challenge for anyone working in the areas of economics and finance is to try to interpret current events and explain their importance to the wider community. After every major financial crisis in history there has been social, cultural and political change. It is vital to have an interest and understanding of these events as they will affect us all, our children and grandchildren – it is that big. Whether you run your own business, are looking to move up the career ladder, are saving for retirement etc these events will affect your future opportunities and aims.   The module intends to provide opportunities, space and time for you to reflexively consider the current key economic issues and challenges experienced and encountered within management practice. At the end of the module you will know the vital role that a healthy financial system plays in the development of economies and will understand the true power of money.
  • Strategy Dynamics in Context
    In order for organisations to adapt to macro and micro environmental change and to maximise organisational potential, leaders have to become more aware of the importance of their strategic understanding, perception and comprehension of the wider context of the fluid global world within which they operate themselves.   The main focus of this module is to afford you an opportunity to explore a range of real-time strategic issues that are currently influencing the wider business context. The module will move from the theoretical to the practical where you will be encouraged through the development of scenario stories to enhance your skills and capabilities.
  • Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship
    Enterprise and entrepreneurship, once regarded as a distinct discipline without relevance to corporate life, have become an accepted part of executive education programmes, developing skills which add value in any context, rather than just for those who intend to start their own business. Entrepreneurship in this module is viewed as a process to provide sustainable economic, social and institutional change. The process starts with idea generation and leads to the starting of a venture. Matching conceptual foundations with practical training and real life case studies, enables you to fully explore and test your entrepreneurial ideas. It is increasingly recognised that social entrepreneurs (those attempting to combine sustainability with the creation of socially beneficial impacts) follow similar, if not identical, processes to private sector entrepreneurs. You will be introduced to the concept of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship, exploring the similarities and differences between them and the profit motivated enterprise. Again, current practice, examples and the rapidly developing theoretical framework of social entrepreneurship will all form part of the content.
  • Research Methods
    This module provides you with the appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities you will need to effectively carry out a piece of small scale business/management research. A particular emphasis will be placed upon developing individuals towards your Masters dissertation/project. A focus is given to the specific issues faced by managers and researchers when carrying out research in an organisational setting. These will include the philosophical aspects of enquiry in social settings, operating in political contexts, negotiating access to key individuals and data, and meeting the research outcomes expected by multiple organisational stakeholders. Consequently, this module will focus on providing individuals with the necessary skills to meet these challenges and therefore effectively plan, carry out and report upon their Masters level dissertation/project.
  • Finance and Decision Making
    This module does not assume any prior Accounting or Finance experience. The aim of this module is to equip students with two key management capabilities: - financial literacy - decision support competence Financial literacy could be defined as comprising the following: reading and interpreting published company accounts; analysis of Capital structure; long-term (capital investment) and short-term decision making; assessment of working capital efficiency. Decision support involves awareness and understanding of appropriate short-term decision making techniques.
  • Strategic Marketing
    Marketing is an organisational-wide discipline that exists to achieve organisational goals by creating value through relationship exchanges, internally and externally. The marketing environmental scanning process involves an assessment of the organisation’s resources and capabilities in order to paint a true picture of market options. A host of resources must be in place across the organisation before marketing strategies can be implemented effectively. A number of issues may need to be addressed first, for example, investments may need to be made in technology, the organisation may need to be re-structured, or further financial resources sought, a skills gap analysis may reveal training needs. Success relies on a cross-functional appreciation of this core business function and good relationships with stakeholders, each of which play a role in the development of corporate reputation. Corporate communications permeate the entire organisation and generate images and impressions amongst stakeholders. With such reputational risk at play, shouldn't its management be clearly a shared organisational responsibility? This module takes a fresh look at the contemporary role of marketing and explores emerging challenges that are shaping its field.
  • Twenty-first Century Leadership
    This module will investigate and critically evaluate approaches to leadership for the twenty-first century, focusing especially on leadership at junior to middle management level. Historical and classical theories of leadership will be briefly be examined including traits, competencies, styles and situation. However the main emphasis will focus on contemporary approaches to leadership including political dynamics, emotional intelligence and psychodynamics, transformational leadership, leader-led relationships, moral & spiritual leadership and resilience in leadership. There will be a strong emphasis on applying the theory to one's own personal leadership with a view to enhancing leadership performance in preparation for middle management roles within the organisation. One of the main focuses for the design of this module has been the further development of relevant employability and professional skills. Such skills are implicit in the learning outcomes. Multiculturalism has been considered during the design of this module and will be considered when the assessment brief is written.
  • Strategic Human Resource Management and People Management
    Generally, this module offers you a critical overview of the theories and debates about the nature of contemporary HRM and people management. It will, in that respect, seek to familiarise you with the relationship between overall organisational strategy and HRM strategy and practice as well as new ideas and methods about managing people and work organisation in organisational and socio-economic contexts that are in permanent state of flux.   The module will, therefore, seek to facilitate critical evaluation of managerial strategy and the application of strategic HRM and, more importantly, people management theories to the management of human resources in the pursuit of organisational goals. Consequently, upon completion, you will be expected to demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories and develop the necessary competencies to apply them to organisational contexts. Such critical understanding should also involve some appreciation of pluralist nature of organisation and, therefore, the implication of theory and practice for the sectional interests of the various organisational stakeholders.
  • Risk Management and Valuation
    This course covers the remarkable story of risk and the people who have developed the ideas that we use to manage it – maximising the upside whilst also minimising the downside. A key focus of many managers is understanding how to value projects and assets. The various methods that can be used are covered from the so called ‘traditional’ techniques to consideration of valuation issues with modern high-tech companies (those with little history, negative earnings, limited real assets and few peer companies to benchmark them against). We are living through the most perilous economic and financial era for generations. In the past investments (whether by businesses or personally) would be made based on the ‘fundamentals’. In the short term today this can virtually be forgotten about as central banks around the world utilise unconventional policies to try and aid the recovery. This is truly one of the greatest monetary experiments in history – it is vital to understand the possible implications of these policies on all sectors.   Consideration is given to how managers can manipulate the figures to drive their companies share prices higher. The ethical issues around such financial driven incentives is reviewed and critically analysed. The focus on short term aims rather than social better long term goals is covered.
  • Issues for Contemporary Business Practice
    The module attempts to develop and build upon critical thinking about management and general business theory and practice. The central purpose of the module encourages students to critically examine established and emerging beliefs and assumptions about market facing organisational and business environments. A key aim of the module is to enable you to question your own experiences, beliefs and assumptions, as well as the beliefs and assumptions of established discourses and theories which influence how management practice is interpreted, performed and justified. With organisations now experiencing unprecedented and complex challenges, historical thinking about organisations and management practice has been called into question. By reflecting upon and questioning established thinking and theory, the module seeks to challenge meanings and facilitate re-thinking to stimulate and reframe debates around managerial approaches to find new ways to organise and intervene which potentially offer radical, creative and viable alternatives. The inclusion of further ways of thinking about organisational matters around collaborative working, neo-liberal influences, alternative management paradigms (Far East and Middle East), the nature of public/private and third sector complexities is intended to facilitate critical analysis through the lens of a current challenge relevant to the discipline (e.g. management and leadership).
  • Capstone Project
    This capstone project is practical, desk based, and is designed to promote critical thinking and provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate some or all of the following in a practitioner environment: - The ability to challenge and meaningful question issues in relation to their business and management specialisms, reflecting upon international business environments - Depth of knowledge which may involve working at the current limits of theoretical, practitioner and or research understanding - Critical understanding of method and its relationship to business knowledge and application - Awareness of and ability to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice through reflection and application of International ethical and governance codes. - The ability to draw meaningful and justifiable conclusions from information which may be complex or contradictory - The ability to communicate these processes in a clear and effective manner

Assessment

Methods of assessment are varied and have been considered in line with the QAA business and management subject benchmarks for applicability to business management subjects. A wide range of methods are evident throughout the course such as learning portfolios, poster displays, presentations (individual and group), research projects, coursework with discussion elements and ultimately ending in a major project viva voce.

Ideally applicants will hold a good first degree in a relevant subject however this is not essential. The main entry requirement for this Executive MBA is experience at a management level. All applicants will be interviewed to ensure they meet the requirements and understand the expectations of this course. Applicants will be expected to engage with the subject matter and offer critical debate utilising their own work and life experiences.
