Careers

Successful completion of this course will give you the potential to advance your career into leadership positions within clinical settings, or in the fields of management, research and teaching.  You’ll be equipped with the skills and knowledge to become an innovative, forward-thinking practitioner, with the qualities needed to affect change in healthcare planning, delivery and education.

You’ll also have the opportunity to complete the course with an additional qualification as a Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) practitioner. Many of our Masters level midwifery students go on to complete professional doctorates.

Modules & assessment

Core modules

  • Promoting Normal Childbirth
    This module addresses one of the major national and international concerns about childbirth, the rising rate of intervention, and will provide you with the underpinning knowledge and confidence required to modify this situation. You will be encouraged to develop your existing knowledge and skills by exploring the concept of normality and determining how this might be promoted during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods. Both international and local perspectives will be analysed, enabling you to apply your learning to your particular position whilst deepening your understanding of alternative situations.
  • Facilitating Complex Birth
    This module explores the role of the midwife in supporting women with complex social, emotional, and physical needs. You will be encouraged to explore both direct and indirect causes of maternal death and the role of the midwife in addressing these. You will also be expected to consider wider influences on maternal mortality and morbidity. Strategies for the maintenance of normality within such complex situations will be promoted. You will be supported in applying your learning to your own clinical practice and in developing your skills in caring for women with complex needs.
  • Research Studies
    This module is designed to provide you with a critical overview of the main methodologies and designs applied to research within health and social care, professional practice, regulation and policy. It will provide you with an opportunity to explore the theoretical dilemmas that underlie the process of inquiry and its relationship to practice. The module will provide a framework within which to select, evaluate and justify the research methods chosen for your research project. The module requires you to prepare and write a research proposal which will normally lead to a level 4 dissertation. Hence prior knowledge of some research approaches at level 3 is normally expected. This module is taken by students on a variety of courses. Learning will usually be with a group of students who bring different academic and/or professional interests to their study, thus providing a community of collaborative learning well suited to interdisciplinary exploration.
  • Major Project
    The Major Project, which is central to the Masters award, enables students to demonstrate their ability to synthesise learning from previous modules and use this learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing up a research or work-based project. This project provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate: the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to their specialism; depth of knowledge which may involve working at current limits of theoretical and/or research understanding; critical understanding of research methods and its relationship to knowledge; awareness of and ability to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice; the ability to draw meaningful and justifiable conclusions from information which may be complex or contradictory; the capability to expand or redefine existing knowledge to develop new approaches to changing situations and contribute to the development to best practice; the ability to communicate these processes in a clear and sophisticated fashion; the capability to evaluate their work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner. In the course of your studies with us you may generate intellectual property which is defined as an idea, invention or creation which can be protected by law from being copied by someone else. By registering with us on your course you automatically assign any such intellectual property to us unless we agree with the organisation covering the cost of your course that this is retained by them. In consideration of you making this assignment you will be entitled to benefit from a share in any income generated in accordance with our Revenue Sharing Policy in operation at that time. Optional modules

  • Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE)
    This module will focus on the specialist knowledge and the clinical skills that are required to enable you to competently undertake a thorough Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) in clinical practice. You will utilise in-depth knowledge and understanding that you have gained to enable you to recognise the deviations from the normal to initiate appropriate care and referral. Critical reflection and completion of the practice documents will allow you to further identify your learning needs and develop your scope of professional practice.
  • Advanced Communication Skills
    This interprofessional module is based upon experiential learning to explore the student's own learning needs in relation to communication issues. You will reflect upon the importance of good communication and explore the theory of communication in complex situations. You will have the opportunity to practice and critically review your micro skills in a safe environment. This will enable the development of reflexivity and increased self awareness in relation to your own performance. The module will require students to identify stressors prevalent in this work in order to broaden their repertoire of coping strategies.
  • Law & Ethics in Health & Social Care
    This module highlights the ethical and legal aspects related to your professional practice. There will be an analysis of legal cases and the statutory provision driving practice coupled with an exploration of current ethical issues, such as resource allocation and judicial review, issues of consent, death and dying and respecting life. The application of principles, theories and the legislative framework will be presented to you via reflective activities, case situations and scenarios, which will enable students to access their knowledge, trace their implications, refine their outcomes and evaluate the degree of moral justification they possess. You will also have the opportunity to focus on particular aspects of law and ethics that have relevance to your practice or personal interest This module is particularly relevant to health and social care professionals wishing to develop crucial insights into legal and ethical issues in practice.
  • Strategic Management & Commissioning
    On this module you will be familiarised with the planning and methods of various community assessment methods that inform priority setting and equable service provision (eg Health Needs Assessment). It will introduce you to the principles and methods of partnership working, leadership and change management.
  • Global Leadership
    Businesses, whether private, public or third sector, operate in a world facing a range of urgent global issues. This module examines the fitness of business in both Health and Social care and other sectors and individuals to tackle such issues. The key focus will be: effective decision making, adoption of a global approach, creation of a new business paradigm and a contemporary mission. Our module also considers the related concept of MisLeadership, which looks at how leaders have often failed to achieve the optimum outcomes for those they lead. Leaders predominantly create context and this module will explore the skills required to successfully mould and develop the context in a complex evolving environment. Our module will critically examine the following areas: emotional intelligence; leadership behaviours in the 21st century; definitions of leadership, global leadership and misleadership within the context of urgent global concerns; strategic decision making; environmental change; the role of the individual in a leadership position individually, in an organisation and in the wider community; organisational culture; complexity theory; hard and soft systems methodologies; local, national and international policy.
  • Care of the Critically Unwell Woman
    This module will enable you to develop in-depth knowledge and skills when caring for the critically unwell woman, during the child bearing continuum. Work-based learning is incorporated into the module in order to recognise and value your professional expertise. While practicing midwifery in an area where women with high dependency needs will be cared for, you will also spend clinical time developing your skills in the high dependency or intensive care unit.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary between modules and include written essays, seminar presentations with supporting papers, a research proposal and, for the Masters award, a major project of no more than 18,000 words.

All the assessment methods are designed to demonstrate the range of knowledge and skills expected of a practitioner working at an advanced level.

Facilities

As a midwifery postgraduate student at our modern Chelmsford campus, you’ll enjoy all the academic and social benefits you could expect from one of the largest and most exciting universities in England. Our William Harvey building has a specialist midwifery clinical skills room that is used to simulate practice skills training.

Our midwifery team works with international agencies such as the UK Network on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, World Health Organisation (WHO), The White Ribbon Alliance and the London School for Health and Tropical Medicine. In addition many of the team have specific research interests and are either completing, or have completed doctorates.

Anglia Ruskin is one of only a few universities in the UK to hold Baby-Friendly Initiative full accreditation.

You must hold an appropriate midwifery qualification and have a minimum of one year’s post-qualification experience of working as a midwife. An Honours degree qualification is also usually required.

Our published entry requirements are a guide only and our decision is based on your overall suitability for the course as well as whether you meet the minimum entry requirements.
