Careers

You'll be learning about issues directly relevant to your job. This approach benefits both you and your employer since the course content and assessment are based around work activities, reinforcing and supporting the development of your practical skills and understanding.

There's a major project which enables you to study one particular area of interest both to you and your employer. Previous students have carried out a wide range of projects, including producing a report on comparable organisations' customer service policies, an analysis of a specific logistical issue within their company and a study of e–marketing opportunities available to their employer. This project gives you a specialist understanding of a particular area of activity, while the employer gains not only from the final report that you produce, but also from the in–depth knowledge that you can then apply to your work.

Modules & assessment

Year one, core modules

  • Managing People, Customers and Markets
    This module is designed to provide you with a fundamental understanding of organisations and the importance of effective management of people, customers and marketing. These areas will be explored with an emphasis on the understanding and use of appropriate theories to explain the ways in which business organisations respond to issues and problems. The module will introduce the role of an organisation, its size, structure, and culture. It will also consider the role of the manager and nature of managerial work and the effect on people within the organisation. Notions of markets, an appreciation of customers, and an introduction to supply chain management will also be examined. This module will provide a fundamental appreciation of managing people and marketing, and upon completion of Financial Management and Financial Forecasting, you will have a strong foundation in these business functions. The assessment for this module will consist of 2 distinct assignments, the first analysing people management processes in the organisation, and their links to theoretical concepts, and the second, a critique of an organisational marketing campaign.
  • Work Based Practice
    The work environment provides a rich setting for exploration and discovery of a range of knowledge, skills and understanding. This module is the first part of a work-based learning strand, to explore the relationships between the world of work and the academic discipline, and to apply the learning so far in a work based setting, through a negotiated project. In this module you will undertake the preparatory work for the project, with a strong emphasis on the project proposal. You will develop employability skills, reflective practice, and problem solving, both individually and in groups. You will consider the links between theory and practice, and be introduced to business research skills. You will also be expected to reflect on your work practice, critically appraise your own performance and report on their experience of work based learning.

Year two, core modules

  • Managing Projects and Organisational Change
    This module develops the skills and knowledge needed to deliver a successful business project, making effective use of resources and managing change within organisations. The ability to manage projects effectively is widely regarded as a key aspect of management, and this module considers the nature of the project environment, the role adopted by the project manager and the relationships between projects and the objectives of the sponsoring organisation. The module will also examine change management projects within organisations, and in particular how project management and change management techniques can be combined in such way as to increase organisational effectiveness. Critical evaluation of the issues involved in change management processes allows informed choices to be made by managers when attempting to reconcile the needs of the organization with the demands of the environment in which the organisation operates.
  • Managing a Sustainable Business
    The external environment in which organisations operate is no longer stable and predictable, but is increasingly dynamic, complex and uncertain. This module allows you to examine, analyse and evaluate the forces in the external environment which impact on organisations. A combination of case studies, historical analysis and 'live' business problems will be employed to allow the application of theoretical frameworks. You will be encouraged to examine different approaches and to formulate strategic responses, which take account of ethical issues and environmental sustainability and their implications for managers .This module will make reference to the introductory PESTLE analysis undertaken in the Level 4 module Understanding Work Based Learning and the Sector, and enable you to analyse and evaluate the external environmental impacts .It is anticipated that guest speakers will enhance the delivery of this module to deliver sector specific sessions regarding external constraints with regard to environmental sustainability and ethical considerations .The assessment will require you to examine the relevance and importance of the concept of 'Sustainability' to your organisation or a specific business issue. This will be achieved through an assignment and a poster.
  • Leadership in Practice
    This is a self-managed and experience-based module that requires you to engage with, and subsequently reflect upon and assess, your own learning and development in an on-going manner as demonstration of your commitment to continuing professional development as a leader. This module will investigate and evaluate classical and contemporary approaches to leadership theory, focusing on leadership at supervisory, middle and senior management level. There will be a strong emphasis on applying the theory to your own personal leadership with a view to enhancing leadership performance or potential for leadership/promotion to more senior management roles within the organisation. Developing leadership in others through coaching and mentoring will also be discussed and explored to build on the learning partnerships that were developed in the first year modules. The assessment requires you to critically reflect on your own effectiveness as a leader or potential leader, and to produce recommendations for your own personal leadership development. Feedback will be provided throughout the delivery to allow formative assessment of the emerging leadership competencies and evaluations. This will happen through the e-tivities and will be a mix of tutor, self and peer assessment. One of the main focuses for the design of this module has been the further development of relevant employability and professional skills. Such skills are implicit in the learning outcomes. Multiculturalism has been considered during the design of this module.
  • Work-Based Project
    The Work Based Major Project module allows you to engage in a substantial piece of individual work-based research project on a topic of your choice within the business, and management field that will inform and contribute to the effectiveness of your workplace, and personal professional interests. The project topic will be assessed for suitability to ensure sufficient academic challenge and satisfactory supervision by an academic member of staff, and it must also have the support of your workplace/employer. The main focus of this module is the furtherance, and development of, transferable skills, which include the ability to manage a complex project, to introduce change within the workplace, presentation and negotiation skills. The project will provide theoretical underpinnings that will involve an in depth review of the literature specific to the aims, objectives, and questions of the work-based research. This will require you to consider, and select, a variety of relevant literature, identifying key concepts that have been synthesized from a variety of sources. This will help you to consider an appropriate research design and methodology, its operational and ethical implications in the workplace. Completion of the university ethics approval form will be required for all projects. Multiculturalism has been considered during the design of this module and will be considered when the assessment brief is written.

Assessment

You'll be assessed through a combination of written assignments, presentations and project work. There are no exams.

Most English undergraduates take out a tuition fee loan with Student Finance England. The fees are then paid directly to us. The amount you repay each month is linked to your salary and repayments start in April after you graduate.

  • 100 UCAS tariff points from subjects at GCE/VCE A Level or VCE doubled award or equivalent.
  • GSCE in Mathematics and English Grade C or above, or equivalent.
