The Railyard opened in 2014 in central Cambridge, just 15 minutes’ walk from campus. It’s divided into three blocks, with 244 individual bedrooms and a shared common room.

Bedrooms

The Railyard has 244 en-suite rooms, divided into three accommodation blocks named Stephenson, Brunel and Telford. You’ll live in Stephenson or Telford. All rooms have:

  • a small double bed, desk, chair, shelving, mirror and wardrobe
  • en-suite shower and toilet
  • internet – wired and wireless.

Some rooms are adapted for students with specific needs, for example wheelchair users, and medical requirements.

Kitchens

You’ll share a kitchen/living area with five to seven students. It features comfy seating and a flatscreen TV (you share the cost of a TV licence), plus a fridge, freezer, microwave, cooker, toaster and kettle. You could other buy kitchen items after you arrive and share the cost with your housemates (see What’s in the room and what to bring).

The building

As well as homes, The Railyard development includes a range of shops, restaurants and bars. It’s next to the railway station and a short walk from Cambridge Leisure Park which has a cinema, bowling alley, gym and more.

At The Railyard you’ll find bicycle storage and a launderette. However, there isn’t any car parking on site.

All our students can use the Railyard common room which has a widescreen TV, football table, pool table and a PlayStation.

Support and services

  • Staff are available on-call 24 hours a day.
  • CCTV is installed.
  • Communal areas such as the stairs and corridors will be cleaned. You’ll be responsible for cleaning your own bedroom, bathroom and shared kitchen.

Occupancy agreements

  • Occupancy agreements run for 43 weeks through the academic year from 14 September 2016 to 12 July 2017.
  • Rent for 2016/17 is £159.14 per week for an en-suite room. The total cost of your occupancy agreement is £6843.02. Rent includes bills to a generous threshold.
  • Your agreement will be with Downing who you can also contact with any maintenance requests.
  • For The Railyard Downing charges a deposit of £250.
