Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a fast developing branch in mechanical engineering that saves industries millions of pounds.

CFD uses high performance computers and simulations software to predict the impact fluid flow will have on a product. The computerised model solves mathematical equations to provide information such as pressure, temperature and velocity without needing a sensor on an expensive real life model, which might move or fail.

The fluid could be anything from air and water to gas, oil and even blood, and can be used in areas such as automotive, aerodynamics, medical, environmental and sports engineering. CFD can also be used to understand natural physical events such as weather forecasting. One main advantage of CFD is that it gives detailed results of flow pressure and velocity at any desired point and it's flexible in changing and optimising environmental and design parameters.

Our Engineering Analysis, Simulation, and Tribology (EAST) research group has been using CFD in numerous industrial collaborations for over a decade.

Our key areas of CFD expertise are:

  • turbulent flow
  • incompressible flow
  • compressible supersonic flow
  • multi-phase flow, such as sand blasting with mixture of air/water/sand
  • convection heat transfer
  • discrete phase modelling
  • unsteady fluid flow
