Travelling to the Chelmsford campus

Maps and guides to Chelmsford can be found at the bottom of this page.

Environmentally-aware travel

As a University we are committed to doing all we can to reduce the environmental impact of traffic travelling to our campuses, and promote the use of public transport wherever possible.

Public transport

By bus/coach

The bus station is on Duke Street, a 15-minute walk from our campus. Local bus services run by First Group and National Express coaches usually stop here.
By train

Our campus is only a ten-minute walk from the station which is on the main London Liverpool Street - Norwich line. There are up to six trains an hour to London, with the travel time being approximately 35 minutes.

Regular direct services also run to:
  • Stratford
  • Shenfield
  • Braintree
  • Witham
  • Colchester
  • Clacton-on-Sea
You can use National Rail Enquiries to plan your journey.

Transport Direct has a comprehensive door-to-door journey planner which provides routes by train, bus and on foot.

By bike

We're easily accessible by bike, with a number of cycle paths leading onto and around campus and plenty of cycle parking (see our Chelmsford campus map for exact locations).

You can download a handy cycle map of Chelmsford from the Essex County Council website.

Parking at Chelmsford

Parking at on our Chelmsford Campus is severely restricted. Staff and students who joined us from September 2010 onwards are not permitted to park on campus, with the exception of Blue Badge holders. Please note that some car parking is available for students on campus during weekday evenings after 6pm, at weekends and bank holidays.

Visitor parking is also limited and must be booked in advance by the member of staff you are visiting.

Park & Ride

Chelmsford has two Park & Ride sites providing a frequent service to and from the city.
  • Chelmer Valley Park & Ride: buses run straight through our campus. On Monday to Friday, buses run every ten minutes from 7am until 5pm, then every 12 minutes until 7pm, then a reduced service with the last bus leaving campus at 9.13pm. Buses also run on Saturdays.
  • Sandon Park & Ride is at junction 18 of the A12 (the A414/A1060 Maldon Road interchange). The site has over 1,100 parking spaces and buses run to the city centre every ten minutes throughout the day.
Prices for both Park & Ride services are:
  • Adult daily: £3
  • Adult weekly: £15 (conditions apply)
  • Adult monthly: £55 (conditions apply)

Alternative parking

There are also a number of public car parks within easy walking distance of our campus. Rectory Lane has a long stay car park just two minutes walk away and The Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre car park is on Victoria Road, only five minutes away.

More information on parking within the city is available from the Chelmsford Borough Council website.
