I chose Anglia Ruskin University as it seemed to have clear objectives for training teachers efficiently. The programme appeared to be geared towards training students practically, whilst showing them how language teaching should be. As a mature international student I was given great support from staff and from Anglia Ruskin. I have been impressed by the brilliant teaching methods of each lecturer and have acquired knowledge as to how to put theory into practice in classroom situations. I hope to go back to Korea with an MA and begin teaching EFL, this time well equipped with the latest know how."

One thing that came very quickly was support, whether it is for getting accommodation, writing a CV, or academic help, this includes English as well. I was able to take English classes to improve my writing. Student advisers are there to direct you and get all sorts of issues sorted. Lecturers also are easy to contact and there either for advice in the career you are entering, reference or help with a particular subject of the course."

I feel very much empowered professionally."
Soledad del Carmen Veliz Córdova, from Chile
Studied: MSc Child Illustration"I am a psychologist from Universidad de Chile. When I finished my undergraduate studies I applied for a scholarship to study in England. I lived in London for one year, where I studied Forensic Mental Health at King's College. While I was studying in London I read the book "illustrating for children's picture books" by Martin Salisbury, which inspired me to apply for the programme. I was an independent illustrator so I had never studied it before. I was really glad when ARU accepted me into the programme so the day after I finished my thesis I moved to Cambridge, where I lived from January 2008 to January 2010.
Cambridge is an excellent city to study. The programme at ARU was extremely different from the programme at King's College. One of the most impressive characteristics of the programme at ARU is the constant supervision by the professors and the excellent relationship between the students. I learnt a lot during my studies at ARU, from the professors as well as my classmates. One of the things I liked the most was the trip we took to Florence to attend the Children's Book Fair. It was a unique instance to learn about the global editorial field. During that visit I realised how small the market is in Latin America compared to Europe, USA and even Asia.
I live in Chile now, where I work as a freelance children's book illustrator and I teach at two of the best universities in the country: I teach Forensic Psychology for undergraduate students at Universidad Catolica and I work in a Centre for Technologies of Inclusion (CEDETI) at Universidad de Chile, where I am in charge of designing game illustrations for children between the ages of 4 and 9.
I love what I do and if I had not studied at Anglia Ruskin, I would have never discovered how to combine psychology and illustration."
Kazuno Kohara, from Japan
Studied: MA Children's Book Illustration, MA PrintmakingKazuno's first book 'The Haunted House' appeared in the New York Times 10 Best Illustrated Children's Books List in 2008.
"I studied at Anglia Ruskin University from 2005 to 2008, and received MA Children's Book Illustration and MA Printmaking.
Children's Book Illustration course was structured proficiently, and despite the fact that I had never been to an art school previous to that, I was able to learn and develop the skill and gain knowledge effectively.
There were warm support and encouragement from the tutors and classmates. We had a crit every week, where we gathered and presented our week's progress and ideas for the project, and criticise each other's work, which were very inspiring.
Lectures were always interesting. Authors and illustrators were invited, as well as editors from publishers, which helped me to understand their relationship and how things work in the field of children's book. A series of joint lectures with Homerton College, Cambridge University gave me an opportunity to look into children?s books from a different aspect.
At the end of the course, there was a graduation exhibition in London. Editors from many children's book publishers were invited, and that was where I was contacted by the publisher now I work with. My first book, published in 2008, was based on one of the books I created for the master's project.
I got interested in printmaking when I was studying in Children's Book Illustration course, and took Printmaking course from 2007 to 2008. Anglia Ruskin University has a printmaking studio which is professionally equipped. There were students who came from various artistic backgrounds, whose destinations also diverse, and their advice helped me to look at my work objectively. Tutors and staffs worked in the same studio out of teaching hours, and their works were always extremely inspiring.
What I learnt from the course had a significant influence on my work, both internally and externally."
Israa Hakeem, from Saudi Arabia
Studied: English as a Foreign Language"Through the short period of time I have attended Anglia Ruskin University Language Centre I have improved my English language and gained the knowledge and confidence I need to pursue my life as a Master student at the University. All this was given in an amazing environment and with great faculty support."
Mark Valenzuela, from Philippines
Studied: Overseas Nursing Programme"There are lots of job opportunities for nurses, not just locally but nationally and I would recommend the ONP to any student currently in the Philippines or in any other county around the world who is considering a career in Nursing here in the UK: It has helped me to become a more experienced nurse as well as given me a range of new and exciting career goals that I can aim for."
Vinay Mohandas, from India
Studied: MBA"It has been a very rewarding experience with Anglia Ruskin University. My tutors were excellent. Overall I had a fantastic journey."
Eze Ogbonnia Eze, from Nigeria
Studied: MA Global Communication"It has given me the opportunity to develop and acquire global knowledge, confidence and a direction towards my career path. My ambition is to study and get my doctorate degree and my course set that pace for my doctorate journey."
Marques Hardin , from United States
Studied: MSc Audio and Video Technology"I really enjoyed the professors. They were very passionate about their topics and worked well with the students. I benefited from my course, because I had a chance working with software and products that is actually used in my industry. I wanted to be as well rounded in Audio/Video Technology as possible. My course exposed me to post production, which was a skill set I was lacking. It will ultimately make me more marketable when I will return to the work force."
Ali Sbratty, from Mauritius
Studying: Optometry"Optometry is challenging as well as interesting. You will have the opportunity to explore the various aspects of the science of light with respect to vision and in addition, develop mathematical skills which will help you in practice. Furthermore, if you like the thought of helping people, this course offers the human touch which means you will have to deal with patients while delivering the best standards as a healthcare professional.
I am particularly delighted to say that the course is above my expectations. With the lecturers available whenever there is a part of the course, from early mornings in their office to even late nights through emails, coupled with the rich resources in terms of textbooks and study spaces offered by Anglia Ruskin University's library. The eye clinic of Anglia Ruskin University is well equipped for the student to explore and enjoy the subject and its applications. From keratoscopy to probing into the inner features of the eye, a whole range of equipment is available to help us in our task. I am delighted to say that studying at Anglia Ruskin University is a pleasurable experience."
Dwarka Nayak, from India
PhD Research scholar"Previously I have worked with Tribal people in deep forest villages as part of a UK government funded project supporting sustainable livelihood and I realized that I should have deep understanding of real life oriented research skills to analyse the efficiency of such projects and to understand how best to support the vulnerable.
I choose to join the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University because of its innovative vision and mission and expertise in labour history, migration, and social justice. I moved to Cambridge in September 2010 and since have been learning much about the working lives of the 'precariat' in the UK and also about the latest research methods.
Anglia Ruskin University has exceeded my expectations in the opportunities it offers to improve students' knowledge and research skills. Academic staff are understanding of students' particular needs. They are friendly and happy to help. The university has rich collection of academic of both electronic and paper resources.
Really I would like to suggest Anglia Ruskin University as a good destination for International students."
Ellen Mweneaongole , from South Africa
PhD Forensic Science & Chemistry Scholar"I already had a Master degree in Forensic Science and wanted to further my studies on an in-depth research project focusing on developing a method for detecting drugs of abuse in wastewater and thereby determining the 'drugs of choice' for Cambridge residents.
I've enjoyed being able to manage the direction of my project (with assistance from supervisors), learning new sample preparation and instrumental techniques, the opportunity to teach undergraduates, the opportunity to attend various training courses to enhance my skills; all which contribute to gaining new knowledge & skills in my field, gaining work-related experience and hence being more marketable on the job market.
I'd recommend it for those who would like to develop their research skills in a challenging but interesting environment. There is a team of teaching and support staff (supervisors, advisors, student services, faculty office, training department etc.) ready to assist them in achieving their goals. In addition, it is run by a faculty which is positively & effectively making its mark in the research arena within the UK.
Ultimately my chief goal is to work within a research facility developing analytical methods and techniques which can be used on a much wider scale. During my time at ARU, I have assisted with teaching undergraduates, I have been a student representative for research students in the FS&T, I have gained invaluable project management, analytical & research skills; all which I believe have prepared me to re-enter the job market."
Mavis Mawuena Atadika , from Ghana
BSc (Hons) International Nursing"I just arrived a week ago, but I feel very good. The people in Chelmsford are lovely; I have already made a lot of friends. I love the environment here, because it is very relaxing. I look forward to my next few months."
Macarena Rioseco
MA Fine ArtWhat made you decide to apply for the programme?
"I chose this programme (MA Fine Arts) for several reasons: In first place, because I realised that it focused in helping art students adapt or combine their practices to more concrete work possibilities. The MA gives you the chance to choose between your dissertation in Art and Design or take optional modules related to arts financial management that will further develop an understanding of employability and professional skills within the public arts galleries museums and events sector.
Also I chose Cambridge as a City to live in because it is a very nice and calm place, it is small so you don't need to waste your time commuting and when you have to you are able to enjoy a short bike ride. I found that it is the perfect environment for studying and working."
Was the application process challenging?
"It was in a very good sense. I started my MA about a month and a half ago, but the whole last year has been a great learning experience. I remember the first time I went into the university's web pages I was very confused, I couldn't understand a thing and I couldn't find the information I was looking for. But now I can easily navigate through the web pages of any university and am able to understand their structures and information. Also improving my English is a very rewarding process. A year ago I couldn't express myself very well, and now I feel more confident every day, not only with speaking but also with writing."
Have you received the assistance you need at the university?
"I have a great network of support here in Cambridge, so it was a very easy process for me. I was very impressed with the huge support network existing in ARU, especially for international students. Everybody is available for anything that you need. Emails are always answered, my concerns are always listened and everybody treats you in a kind and caring way."
What are your expectations from the course, what do you expect to gain from the experience?
"My expectation for the MA is to learn the necessary skills in order to establish my artistic practice in a more independent and professional way."
Felipe Gomes de Oliveira from Brazil
BA Graphic Design - Science without Borders ScholarFelipe is a Graphic Design student at Universidade Estacio de Sa in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro. He has won one of the 100,000 Science without Borders scholarships that the Brazilian government is offering students until the year 2014. Here he tells us a bit about his experience in the first month at Anglia Ruskin University
Why did you decide to apply for the programme?
I wanted to live the experience of being immerse in a different culture for a fair period of time.
Why did you choose the UK?
To be able to improve my English and I also because I find British culture quite rich and interesting.
Was the process to apply for SWB challenging?
It was surprisingly simple. I suppose the challenge is to demonstrate proficiency in English and since I'm a Graphic Design student, I had to provide a portfolio as well.
Was the process to arrive in the UK and at ARU easy?
Yes, it all happened according to what was planned and previously arranged, especially because of ARU's airport meet & greet service. The administration of student services at Anglia Ruskin is remarkable.
Have you found moving to the UK easy/difficult? Why?
SWB is providing me a fair financial assistance and the on campus accommodation meets all my needs. I have made new friends and met people in a similar situation as mine. Moving to the UK has been quite easy.
What are your expectations from the course, what do you expect to gain from the experience?
From the whole experience I expect to speak better English, learn as much as possible about different cultures and figure ways of solving "living on my own" daily problems. From the course I expect to gain a little more professional maturity, absorb teacher's knowledge, their tips and tricks, establish great professional contacts and make new friends.
Alonso Carvajal from Chile
MSc International FinanceAlonso Carvajal is from Santiago de Chile. What is interesting about him is that he moved to the UK with his whole family: his wife and 5 children. Yes, 5 children!
He tells us that he and his wife decided to take a year off to have an international experience as a family. Because he had been working in Finance for some time, he decided that doing a Master's degree in International Finance would be the perfect opportunity to widen his knowledge of the area and help his children improve their English, make new friends and learn about other cultures. So they decided to move to Cambridge when he found out about our MSc in International Finance.
"We chose Cambridge because it is close to London and the rest of Europe is very accessible. Cambridge as a city is beautiful and full of British history. It is a great place to live as a family."
Alonso says that he chose this MSc because when he reviewed the modules, they seem to be exactly what he was looking for: International Business, Private Equity, Corporate Finance and Portfolio Investment. "So far, I have seen lecturers and contents of the modules with a high degree of professionalism, in a right balance of pure theory and real case applications."
After his first month at Anglia Ruskin he says that his expectations have been exceeded: "I had heard that the university system in the UK is very independent, they leave you almost alone and you needed to work by yourself. However, my experience at Anglia Ruskin during the first months has been the opposite: they help students enormously in all different concerns about your studies and academic issues: accommodations, health, immigration procedures, etc. Student Services, English department, Chaplaincy Services and Tutors. Everyone does a fantastic job!"
MA Publishing
I was very impressed that the course had ties with Cambridge University Press. I also was pleased to see that they seemed to have a lot of experience with international students. I have been able to secure several internships and get the experience I needed. I even have been hired by one of the places I did my internship at! The extra courses have been helpful to get practical expertise on certain bits of software, like Dreamweaver. A very enjoyable experience overall, and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

MA Arts Management
I enjoyed my course a lot. And my teachers were very easy to collaborate with and get to know. The support was fabulous. My classmates were amazing as well... we did a lot of hands on things and group projects which were really helpful. Everyone at the university was very nice, helpful and polite. My favourite aspect of non-academic life was seeing parts of Cambridge and London - going to museums, churches, parks, heritage sites etc... I had an amazing time. It was enriching and fulfilling. Lovely. Amazing.
