English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

Degree pre-sessional courses

These short, intensive programmes of 23 study sessions per week prepare you for entry to a degree course, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. They are especially suitable for Tier 4 students. If you complete one, you do not have to retake IELTS or any other English language test to progress to your Anglia Ruskin degree. Pre-sessional courses are full time study and your lessons will be between 9 and 5 each day (excluding weekends). Please see individual course pages for details of IELTS entry requirements.

The following pre-sessional courses are available:
  • 24 weeks (IELTS improvement of 2 bands)
  • 18 weeks (IELTS improvement of 1.5/2.0 bands)
  • 13 weeks (IELTS improvement of 1.5 bands)
  • 9 weeks (IELTS improvement of 1 band)
  • 5 weeks (IELTS improvement of 0.5 bands)
  • 3 weeks (IELTS improvement of 0.5 bands in one component).

These courses will improve your writing, listening, speaking, presentation and study skills. They are available at four levels: Basic, Foundation, Competent and Advanced. Successful completion of the Foundation course will give you the required level of English to join our partner institution, CRIC (Cambridge Ruskin International College). Successful completion of the Competent and Advanced level programmes could lead to direct entry to undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses respectively. The following courses are available:

IELTS preparation

Our IELTS preparation courses provide expert preparation if you need to retake IELTS for your Anglia Ruskin University offer (having met all other conditions), for your job or for immigration access to university courses anywhere else in the world. We also provide examination at Cambridge's only IELTS test centre.

The following IELTS preparation courses are currently available:

IELTS bootcamp

We are currently developing part-time IELTS Bootcamp courses for people already in the UK, with quite a good knowledge of English, who:
  • want intensive practice just before taking the test
  • need to get a specific score in the IELTS test, for a university offer, for example
  • might have taken the IELTS before but not achieved the score they require and therefore must take it again.

Our IELTS tests measure the English language ability of candidates and indicates whether they are ready to study or train in English. Anglia Ruskin University is one of the largest IELTS testing centres in the UK, offering around 5,000 test places over 38 test dates per year.

Summer and winter schools

English and Culture Summer School
This course is for anyone who wants to improve their English and discover today's Britain at the same time. You will experience university teaching and our excellent campus facilities while enjoying all the possibilities of a summer in beautiful Cambridge. With London just 45 minutes away and a whole range of activities in the region, this will be an unforgettable experience.

Academic English Winter School - Cambridge
Academic English Winter School - Chelmsford
Our project-focused three-week winter schools are for anyone who wants to improve their English and undertake extensive study into their subject. You will experience the benefits of university teaching and our excellent campus facilities. The course can be taken in Cambridge, where you will be able to choose from a range of specific subjects, or Chelmsford (business only).

These two courses will begin in January 2015 (dates to be confirmed).

Language courses for Anglia Ruskin University students

Academic and Professional Skills support modules
If English is not your first language you are able (or we may advise you) to take one of these English language modules to support you during your studies. You can take this as a 15-credit module each year so your language support is available at no extra cost to you, and your language learning counts towards your final degree.

Anglia Language Programme (ALP)
The Anglia Language Programme offers all Anglia Ruskin University students the opportunity to study a foreign language providing it is listed among the designated modules for their course.
