Singer and actress Kylie Minogue OBE has been awarded with an honorary degree by Anglia Ruskin University.

Kylie received the honorary Doctor of Health Sciences award at the Chelmsford campus on Wednesday, 5 October for her work promoting breast cancer awareness. Honorary awards were also presented last night to education author Mary Jane Drummond and economist Kate Barker, who was formerly the Chair of Governors at Anglia Ruskin.

Scientists at Anglia Ruskin, based within the Helen Rollason Research Laboratory, are currently researching blood markers that could eventually help with the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

The Australian star, who received her award alongside 224 students, said:

"I was incredibly honoured by today's ceremony and it was an inspiration to be amongst the graduates at Anglia Ruskin University.

"Hopefully my award will help to inspire both the researchers into breast cancer and those affected by it."

Lord Ashcroft KCMG, Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin, said:

"We make honorary awards to individuals of extraordinary talent who have made an outstanding contribution to their chosen field of endeavour. We hope that the recipients of these honorary awards will serve as examples to our graduates."

In total, 11 honorary awards are being presented at the Chelmsford campus to various individuals in recognition of their outstanding achievements. Amongst the distinguished names receiving honorary degrees this week are novelist Jilly Cooper, fashion designer Anya Hindmarch and swimmer Mark Foster.

Other honorary degrees are being awarded to TV sports presenter Manish Bhasin, lawyer Junius Ho, Paralympian Mike Brace, Beijing Union University President Professor Liu Gonghui and wine producer and author Stephen Skelton.
