Prospective research students
We welcome full-time and part-time research students studying in a broad range of subject areas. Our research student community includes recent graduates, experienced academics and professionals and people returning to education after a break of several years.
Professional Doctorate
This part-time programme of advanced study and research offers professional doctoral candidates the opportunity to gain and develop a range of professional research skills relevant to the workplace.Within the Professional Doctorate programme we also offer the following awards:
- Professional Masters
- Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Research
Doctor and Master of Philosophy (PhD/MPhil)
PhD candidates critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic that must result in an independent and original contribution to knowledge. Students must also be able to demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to their field of research. Full-time PhD students normally complete within three to four years, whilst part-time candidates may take up to six years.MPhil candidates also critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic and must demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field.

Candidates who have already published work that has demonstrated an independent and original contribution to knowledge, together with an understanding of research methods appropriate to the field, may submit an application to establish a case to submit a thesis for examination.Research Supervision, Support and Training
Research students are provided with a supervisory team to advise and guide candidates. Research, Development and Commercial Services offers training and support for all research students, including an annual Research Student Conference.Details of the research training offered may be found at

In addition to this support, faculties offer subject-specific training for research students.
Entry Requirements
To register for an MPhil/PhD (subject to candidature), you must normally hold a first or upper second-class honours degree or equivalent. To register directly for a PhD or Professional Doctorate, you must normally hold a Masters Degree or equivalent, that includes training in research. If you do not have these qualifications, your application will be considered on its merits in relation to the nature and scope of your proposed research.

If you are seeking admission as a research student, please complete and submit an application form, including details of your research proposal, to the Admissions Office. This form is available from our Contact Centre on 0845 271 3333 or email answers@anglia.ac.uk.Faculties usually ask prospective research students to attend for an interview. If the Faculty offers you a place, we will write to you with full details of the offer criteria.
