Optometric Clinical Assistants

University Certificate

Part-Time

Course overview

This distance learning course is designed to meet the development needs of people already working as Optometric Clinical Assistants (OCAs). You must be supervised by a registered Optometrist or registered Dispensing Optician. Course modules are studied in the workplace, allowing you to combine theoretical study with the application of essential practical skills.

You will take one module in each semester. In the first semester you will gain a general introduction to the Anatomy of the Eye, the Nature of Common Visual Problems, and the Basic Clinical Techniques used to examine the eye. In the second semester you will explore the more advanced aspects of eye examination techniques and contact lens practice. You will spend approximately six hours per week taking part in tutorials and practical work with your supervisor, plus you will be required to study theoretical material in your own time. At the end of the course your supervisor must confirm that you have acquired the necessary practical competencies.
The courses are delivered as part-time, distance-learning courses lasting for one year. They are studied in the workplace and allow students to combine theoretical study with the application of practical skills. Students must already be employed in an optometric practice and must be supervised by a registered optometrist. Students take two, 30-credit modules, one studied in each semester. One module gives a general introduction to the anatomy of the eye, the nature of common visual problems and the basic clinical techniques used to examine the eye. The choice of the second module depends on the course studied.

Choice of modules depends on the course studied. OCA students take a module which elaborates on the more advanced aspects of eye examination techniques and contact lens practice. ODA students study a module directed towards spectacle dispensing, merchandising and stock control.
Core modules
  • Introduction to Delegated Clinical Procedures
  • Further Delegated Clinical Procedures (OCA students)
