Real Estate Management
BSc (Hons)
Will Brown
Real Estate Management student
“With a family background in valuation and surveying, and having taken on a trainee position in a planning and surveying practice, I needed a course diverse enough to cover many aspects of real estate, whilst not tying me down to a specific career path. Always knowing that I was going to study as a part-time student to complement my work life, and living about a 1 1/2 hour drive from Chelmsford, I ordered a prospectus from Anglia Ruskin University. Being a RICS accredited course, it very quickly emerged that the BSc (Hons) degree course in Real Estate Management was the obvious choice for me.
The 5 year course has aided me tremendously in my professional life, perfectly complementing my role as a trainee surveyor/planner and further as a trainee estates surveyor as my career path has evolved. The well-lectured modules have matched my career needs along my journey so far, whilst my personal tutor has provided outstanding support and guidance throughout my five years. I can thoroughly recommend this course to any budding general practice surveyor/valuer, estates surveyor, town planner (or combination of the above), or anyone who needs to have a broad general understanding in the field.

Course overview
In common with all our built environment degrees, this course has a distinctly practical flavour, the focus being on equipping you with the kind of skills required to operate effectively within professional practice.Property managers or estate managers are experts in investment and valuation of land and property. They arrange funding and advise on legal implications. The course will develop the ability to pursue a career in this diverse area of surveying.
As valuation is a key ingredient in the real estate manager's role, the programme develops this skill through the study of both traditional and contemporary valuation modules as well as investment appraisal and property finance.
Course content recognises the distinction between the professional surveying disciplines, but ensures a level of commonality, essential for the modern surveyor working in a rapidly changing environment. The surveyor of the future will increasingly need to provide expertise in a wider field and have the ability to adapt to meet new challenges.
The specific aims of this course are:
- to develop your ability to think critically and independently about valuation and investment problems and to deal effectively with uncertainty in the pursuit of problem solving;
- to present a significant intellectual challenge designed to motivate you in your studies whether or not the aim is to achieve a career in mainstream surveying;
- to enable you to understand the technical, economic, legal and organisational aspects of the surveying profession and the nature of the boundary relationships that exist (with other built environment professions);
- allowing you to appreciate the significance of the built environment to the wider environment and the economy and society as a whole;
- to develop your understanding of the requirements of professional practice and to ensure you develop a clear sense of professional identity;
- to enable you to develop a proactive approach to learning and a critically analytical approach to knowledge through the exploration of current investment, legal, valuation and financial issues and problems;
- encouraging you to pursue development of expertise in practising your chosen profession.
