Additional course information

Students will choose from a selection of designated modules totalling 60 credits with an acute care focus for this pathway. Students will be advised by the pathway leader or nominee as to which modules will best suit your anticipated career pathway. Students will then complete core modules totalling 60 credits.
Core modules
  • Currently the course consists of two 30 credit, level 6 modules:
  • Research Methodology, Design & Process

(30 Credits Level 6) will allow the student to be analytical and insightful regarding research reports. It will be an invaluable skill for anyone who wishes to provide effective and appropriate care in their individual sphere of practice. In addition, today's practitioner is required to work in a multi professional, multi-agency world which requires skills and insight into the efficacy of research. This module will revisit existing knowledge of the research process and assist the student in further developing skills of critical analysis and ethical appraisal of published work

  • The Undergraduate Major Project

(30 Credits Level 6) allows the student to engage in a substantial piece of work on a topic relevant to acute care. Each healthcare profession, whilst contributing to the delivery of care in the context of inter-professional collaboration, needs to have a sense of its own identity and unique contribution. The student will be provided with support to prepare and submit a summative Undergraduate Major Project.

Assessment

Theory: the assessment will vary depending on the module, but will take the form of either an essay, presentation, OSCE or exam.
Practice: Achievement of proficient level (level 5) in all clinical competencies.

Facilities

It is no surprise that the largest provider of health and social care education in the East of England offers its students state-of-the-art simulated clinical skills laboratories; students therefore have the opportunity to gain the hands-on experience they need. The building in Chelmsford was built in collaboration with the Essex Workforce Development Confederation. All of our students are able to use these facilities as part of their studies.

Our other facilities based in Fulbourn, Cambridge and Peterborough have wall mounted audio visual capture equipment to improve learning and teaching, with the clinical skills laboratories for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development courses.

Work placements

Students will need to be employed in a suitable Acute Care environment with a manager's agreement to provide supervision and mentorship to facilitate practice assessment.

Associated careers

This course provides students with enhanced opportunities for career progression. It also facilitates students to further their professional (eg Nursing Allied Health etc) education at degree level or above.

The Acute Care course will allow practitioners to develop their knowledge and skill base to enable them to function in the ever-changing world of service provision in the acute care environment.
