Course overview

The key to success for any organisation is its people. With the new Professional Practice International Trade course there is now a practical, industry and academically recognised way to equip yourself or your staff with the technical and management skills to transform changes in international markets into business opportunities.

Anglia Ruskin University, in partnership with the Institute of Export and International Trade (IOE), have created a new qualification, the first of its kind, that underpins current industry knowledge with academic theory and skills.

The courses are taught through a mixture of online tutorials and work based assignments, and have been specifically designed to be practical, flexible and fit easily around your job.

The FdA Professional Practice in International Trade gives you an excellent platform to develop your career in international trade. Once you have completed your Foundation Degree, you will be able to progress on to our BA (Hons) Management (Work Based). This will take your learning to the next level, bringing in strategic understanding and enabling you to develop a research project in a specialist area of interest to you.

This course is suitable for all professionals, regardless of industry or sector, who may be working in export, import, trade or international business.
Level 4 core modules
  • Understanding Work Based Learning and Your Work Sector

    Understanding Work Based Learning and Your Work Sector will give you an understanding of work-based learning and help you develop analytical, technological and communication skills. You will focus on the key features of successful management and applying key business tools, including SWOT and PESTLE analysis.

  • The Business Environment

    This module has been designed to provide you with a broad knowledge of potential implications of international trade resulting from global economic developments. You will also be given insight into international trade law and legislation.

  • Finance of International Trade

    This module will provide you with an understanding of key profitability drivers in businesses, and the most appropriate sources of finance to maximise these profits. Managing international risk and appropriate payments systems are the other core elements of this module.

  • International Marketing

    This will introduce you to the basic marketing concepts, and the principles and practices of international marketing. You will learn to interpret the market environment, carry out appropriate research, analyse information accurately and devise appropriate marketing plans for the international environment.

  • International Physical Distribution

    This module will cover the practicalities of overseas transport and distribution, together with the associated legislation and best practice.

Achievement of the above modules comprise the professional award of the Certificate of Higher Education in Professional Practice International Trade.

Level 5 core modules
  • International Marketing Strategy

    this module will address the development of international marketing strategies and plans including market selection, market entry, the marketing mix and some of the organisational aspects relating to international marketing.

  • International Logistics and Purchasing

    This builds on the knowledge of transport mechanisms you developed in Level One and will help you to make recommendations based on various measures such as warehousing, inventory and materials handling.

  • Management of International Trade

    This module addresses development and use of appropriate techniques of corporate strategy and management in an international context.

  • Managing Projects and Organisational Change

    This will introduce and develop the skills and knowledge associated with delivering a successful business project, making effective use of resources and managing change within a business environment.

  • Practical Global Trading

    This is a work related project that will give you the opportunity to consolidate your work across all modules from Level One (Advanced Certificate in International Trade) and Level Two (Diploma in International Trade) and apply this to the workplace.

The above modules complete the Foundation Degree in Professional Practice International Trade.

Assessment

We have some good news, you won't have to sit any exams to pass this course!
Assessments have been designed to utilise and develop skills and learning relating to international trade and management. These are through project work, presentations, course work assignments and case studies.

Flexible study
All modules are delivered through online distance learning. All learning is supported by tutors from Anglia Ruskin University and the Institute of Export. Assignments will be based on real time issues and situations in the workplace. You will have full access to a range of study resources provided by the Institute of Export and Anglia Ruskin University. This includes the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and the university?s online library resources.

Associated careers

There are thousands of vacancies for positions in international trade, ranging from jet-setting salespeople and compliance officers to risk planners and shipping managers. Our pioneering new Foundation Degree prepares graduates for such positions, addressing legal aspects of trading internationally and ways of mitigating risk, alongside market research, marketing in new cultures, logistics and compliance issues. It is the only qualification which enables students to harness prior applied learning, gained in employment, to underpin the formal recognition of their skills and knowledge.

Entry requirements

We usually require you to have an A level, or NVQ level 3, with Maths and English GCSEs at grade C, or equivalent. If you do not meet these criteria but have relevant work experience you are encouraged to apply and credit may be awarded for prior learning and experience. Such applications will be considered on an individual basis.

We also require you to have a good standard of English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent), evidence if necessary by standard level qualifications.
