Course overview
This course will provide you with the skills to manage and lead effectively in complex, dynamic and interprofessional/multidisciplinary organisations. It will develop you both personally and professionally ensuring you have the tools you need to support future development and empower you to achieve your potential for career progression. As well as developing your analytical skills in research awareness, you will be expected to critically analyse your role in the provision of health and social care. Whilst it is envisaged that the majority of students will come from the NHS, the course is also suitable for voluntary and private sector as well as international students. You will advance your knowledge of recent health and social care policy developments and consider the current and future health and social care needs of clients in order to ensure that the views of service users and carers are fully represented in the management of care processes. A Dip HE can be offered as an intermediate award in the BSc Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care distance learning.Additional course information
During your studies you will also develop a critical awareness of the importance of multidisciplinary team work and learn to operate in a collaborative way as an effective leader of the team. The course will also allow you to acquire the ability to analyse and synthesise knowledge of the healthcare environment within which you are employed and apply managerial and leadership principles to solve practical problems and situations. As a manager and leader it is important to maintain a flexible approach to change as a participant, this course will aim to advance your understanding of how to adapt to change and influence change within a health and social care setting. You will have the opportunity to explore, learn with and from other students, reflecting upon the challenges in a constructive way, deepening you.Core modules - Level Six
Research Methodology; Design and Process (30 credits)
With the increased emphasis on research based practice over the last decade, it is essential that established practitioners who wish to undertake further educational programmes are conversant with research methodology and the application of theory to practice in their field.
Leadership Practice in Health and Social Care (30 credits)
Effective leadership is essential to providing high quality practice in health and social care settings. Staff morale and motivation, retention and recruitment, professional development, quality improvement, service efficiency and effectiveness all depend significantly upon the style and quality of leadership at the front line. This module will empower you to develop the necessary leadership skills in order to become a facilitator and motivator of change in the workplace. The focus is upon contemporary theories of leadership such as transformational leadership, distributive and leaderful practice and the notions which underpin leadership such as personal dispositions, values and skills.
Strategic Management in Health and Social Care (30 credits)
Organising and delivering world class health and social care requires a set of strategic management skills which are predicated on sound management theories, techniques and competencies. Using this as the underpinning concept, this module will assist you in advancing your contribution by increasing your understanding of the process of strategy formulation and alongside this, the process of strategic implementation.
Undergraduate Major Project (30 credits)
The individual Final Project module allows students to engage in a substantial piece of individual research and/or product development work, focussed on a topic relevant to their specific discipline. The topic may be drawn from a variety of sources including: Anglia Ruskin research groups, previous/ current work experience, the company in which they are currently employed, an Anglia Ruskin lecturer suggested.
Assessment
The methods of teaching, learning and assessment are dependent upon the strategies within the individual modules. However, they include lecture, debate, discussion, and the sharing of ideas and critical thoughts in a classroom or online setting. Reflective practice is also encouraged to help integrate theory and practice. A wide range of assessment strategies are used including essay and major project; focusing on critical evaluation of management theory and leadership strategies.The modules use a variety of teaching and learning strategies. Presentations and workshops address
Management and Leadership issues at local, national and international levels, using input from local practitioners where appropriate, and incorporating internet data resources and support from an e-learning environment. The course aims to accommodate students with all the preferred styles of learning ranging from lectures to one-to-one tutorials.
Facilities
The libraries are designed as study centres and not simply as places to get books. The staff work closely with the lecturers so that changes in course content are reflected in the stock kept. Overall the libraries contain more than 350,000 items. Mostly these are books or journals but audiotapes, computer material, videos and CD items are available. Together with Media Production and Computer Services the Libraries are developing a wide range of material and equipment. Study places are important to all students and each library has a mixture of individual study carrel and open table provision. The student decides which type of study facility they need on each visit. The membership card will entitle them to a full range of services, including borrowing up to 12 items of stock, photocopy services, reservations, tutorial service, on-line searches, information booklets and guides, user support from the information desks, the full reference services and use of the many hundreds of journals, including those on-line.The Digital Library provides internet access to the full text of hundreds of academic journals to which the library has a digital subscription, as well as to e-books. Many journal articles can therefore be accessed from home or elsewhere.
The Faculty has a number of skills labs where skills can be developed and practiced in a controlled environment.
The course is supported by a Virtual Learning Environment. All module learning materials are provided and students are encouraged to exercises and use the discussion boards where appropriate. Podcasts and other materials to provide bite size explanations of assessments, key themes and other relevant materials are also available.
