Course overview

Students combining English literature and sociology will examine a variety of interesting topics across these two subject areas, whilst developing critical skills and the ability to analyse and discuss complex ideas. You will be supported in this through study skills classes and tutorials. The course will engage with contemporary debates about literature and society, and the interplay of these topics, via a combination of lectures, seminars and group discussions.

During the first year, modules will provide an overview of the subject areas including Introduction to English Literature and Political Ideologies. Building on the confidence and skills developed in the first year, you will then progress to more specialised study during year two (Shakespeare & his Contemporaries and Social Research Methods to give two examples). This will then lead to further specialism in year 3, when you will also have the opportunity to study a topic of your choosing for your dissertation.

A Sociology and English degree can lead to a wide range of careers, including postgraduate study, teaching and lecturing, social work, the caring professions, journalism, business and management, library and museum work.

2 Ds at A-level, or a Pass at Access with three units at Merit or above, but each application is considered on an individual basis.
