Course overview

Our course will provide you with the skills to manage and lead effectively in complex, dynamic and interprofessional/multidisciplinary organisations. It will develop you both personally and professionally ensuring you have the tools you need to support future development and empower you to achieve your potential for career progression.

As well as developing your analytical skills in research awareness, you will be expected to critically analyse your role in the provision of health and social care. Whilst it is envisaged that the majority of students will come from the NHS, the course is also suitable for voluntary, private sector as well as international students. You will advance your knowledge of recent health and social care policy developments and consider the current and future health and social care needs of clients in order to ensure that the views of service users and carers are fully represented in the management of care processes.

Additional course information

During your studies you will also develop a critical awareness of the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork and learn to operate in a collaborative way as an effective leader of the team. Our course will also enable you to acquire the ability to analyse and synthesise knowledge of the healthcare environment within which you are employed, and apply managerial and leadership principles to solve practical problems and situations.

As a manager and leader, it is important to maintain a flexible approach to change as a participant. Our course will aim to advance your understanding of how to adapt to change and influence change within a health and social care setting.

You will have the opportunity to explore, learn with and from other students, reflecting upon the challenges in a constructive way, deepening your awareness of your own and others perspectives.

A Dip HE can be offered as an intermediate award in the BSc Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care distance learning.

Assessment

The methods of teaching, learning and assessment are dependent upon the strategies within the individual modules. However, they include lecture, debate, discussion, and the sharing of ideas and critical thoughts in a classroom or online setting. Reflective practice is also encouraged to help integrate theory and practice. A wide range of assessment strategies are used including essay and major project; focusing on critical evaluation of management theory and leadership strategies.

Associated careers

The BSc (Hons) Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care is a generic skills course aimed at Health and Social Care professionals wishing to further their existing clinical careers in a contextual role. As such this course will enable candidates to pursue leadership roles within their existing career pathways and also to move into higher management positions within the Health and Social Care arena. The course focuses on the Health and Social Care arena but also addresses the more generic concepts necessary for people to move into other areas of Management and Leadership and as such may be considered appropriate by employers in other non Health and Social Care areas.
Entry Requirements: Candidates must be a Registered Nurse or other health care professional. For entry to year 3 candidates should have a relevant Diploma of Higher Education or Foundation Degree in, for example, Nursing or Health and Social Care. Candidates who can provide evidence of prior and experiential learning may be admitted with credit. Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language at a level of IELTS 6.0, or equivalent. GCSE(s) Required: 5 GCSE's at grade C or above including English and Maths
