“I researched Harlow College and was impressed by the famous people who had studied here. The modules on offer fitted my requirements and at interview I was very impressed by the tutors' knowledge and understanding of the subject. The experience of the tutors, as many of them have been involved in the industry, has been invaluable in helping me build a platform for my career. I achieved a 2:1 and am now commencing my NCTJ Newspaper Journalism one year course, after which I will be looking to find work.”
Course overview
Media Studies explores the media within national and international contexts, and prepares you to enter the global employment market and to have a significant influence on it. This degree course offers you the opportunity to explore many different aspects of the media. The course includes both theoretical and practical modules. Theoretical study addresses a range of media institutions, practices, users and audiences, and examines issues such as the construction of visual and textual language and the relationship between media and power. It includes a key address to the politics of representation, including issues of gender, sexuality, race and nation, and the way these are conveyed through various media forms. You will look at both the historical contexts of media practice and the emergence of new and alternative media.
On a practical level, you will develop skills in media research methods, writing, digital media, multimedia, publishing, radio and video production.
