Course overview

Students studying history and sociology will examine a variety of interesting topics across these two subject areas, whilst developing critical skills and the ability to analyse and discuss complex ideas. You will be supported in this through study skills classes and tutorials. The course will engage with contemporary debates about history and society through a combination of lectures, seminars and group discussions.

During the first year, modules will provide an overview of the subject areas including Western Civilisation for the History pathway and Political Ideologies as part of your sociology course. Building on the confidence and skills developed in the first year, you will then progress to more specialised study during year two (History Today and Social Research Methods to give two examples). This will then lead to further specialism in Year 3, when you will also have the opportunity to study a topic of your choosing for your dissertation.
