The Electronic Engineering program has been excellent from the beginning. In my course, modules like computer modelling, digital systems and power control, microelectronic system design and satellite technology are strictly aimed at developing practical skills to industrial aspects, which I really liked. The department has a fully equipped electronics laboratory staffed by a specialist technician. This allows for practical experimentation using real components and hardware, on an open access basis. Furthermore, departmental staff has always been very helpful and friendly with any academic related problems.

Course overview

This degree provides a thorough and detailed study of all the principal areas of modern electronics. Given the key role that electronics now play, not just in science and industry but in all areas of modern life, graduates from this degree will have a remarkably wide range of career opportunities

The specific aims of this course are:

  • to provide the opportunity for you to progressively acquire a thorough grounding in the concepts and skills of the central topics in Electronics.
  • to provide you with the knowledge and skills to develop as a specialist in the areas of electronic system design, instrumentation, interfacing, data acquisition and analysis techniques.
  • in conjunction with other courses within the Department of Computing and Technology, to provide the specialist knowledge base and skills for you to specify and design the electronics subsystems relevant to a particular subject area.
  • to provide you with the engineering skills and knowledge required in a business context to achieve an economic solution.
  • to enhance the University's course provision by offering a range of vocationally useful modules which you will find interesting, stimulating and relevant to a wide range of scientific activities; and by providing a range of transferable skills pertinent to a wide variety of career developments.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
  • show an appreciation of how electronics connects to a wider engineering context
  • demonstrate original thought in solving problems in electronic engineering
  • design systems, components and processors to meet specified requirements
  • essential facts, concepts, theories and principles of electronics.
  • the wider multidisciplinary engineering context and its underlying principles
  • the social, environmental, ethical, economic and commercial considerations affecting the exercise of your engineering judgement.

This degree is about providing you with detailed knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of a branch of technology on which an enormous part of our modern lifestyle depends. It is also about giving you the opportunity to enjoy an exciting and dynamic learning environment that will prepare you for a career that may involve work at the leading edge of new technology development.

Facilities

The Department has specialist laboratories for electronics and microelectronics. The course uses industrial standard software where appropriate including the Xilinx ISE digital systems design software and the National Instruments MultiSim circuit simulation package.

Special features

This course provides the option of taking a sandwich year placement in industry between years two and three. Sandwich placements are taken with an employer working in a field related to your study and can be accommodated when matching positions become available, or when organised by the student. Sandwich year placements are managed by the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Links with industry and professional recognition

This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) at Incorporated Engineer level.

Our Department maintains close links with industry through direct consultancy and through industry-sponsored award and studentship schemes. Our Department has excellent links with the thriving local technology community. This leads to collaboration for student-based projects and part time-work in many external organisations. Our University is a member of the Cambridge Network and Cambridge Refresh group.

Associated careers

Graduates will have a wide variety of career opportunities, ranging from pure research through product design and development, to industrial and business management. Typical future careers include medical electronics, environmental monitoring, microelectronics, sound technology, biophysics, media, industrial process control and teaching.
