Course overview

This unique course is for students looking for a wide variety of forensic knowledge across many fields, enabling them to work in many areas within the criminal-justice system. This course provides you not just with the theoretical and practical skills required of a crime-scene examiner, but also familiarises you with criminological and criminal-justice theories. You will also gain an understanding of the different investigative techniques used by police and investigative services. Upon completion of the course, you will possess a range of transferable skills and techniques needed in the criminal justice system, which will place you ideally to gain employment in
this sector.

The aims of this course are:
  • For you to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the UK legal systems and criminal law, and the impact that these have on the investigation of different crimes.
  • To develop your understanding of the main theoretical and practical skills of a forensic practitioner.
  • To enable you to demonstrate an understanding of the main criminological and criminal justice theories in current use.
  • For you to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the different investigative techniques used by police services.
  • For you to undertake creative, rigorous and relevant research using appropriate methodologies.
  • To prepare you to present reports in oral, written and other appropriate formats.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
  • The subject.
  • The major aspects of terminology.
  • The major types of forensic science evidence.
  • The principle techniques of forensic investigation and their application to criminal cases.

Assessment

You will be assessed via a variety of methods designed to embed transferable employability skills into the course. These methods will include:
  • Written examinations
  • Essays and portfolios of work
  • Work produced from and as a consequence of practical classes
  • Student presentations (oral)
  • Poster presentations
  • Role playing

Associated careers

Upon completion of this course you will be able to work in a variety of areas within the criminal-justice system. As well as in more obvious roles such as police officers, crimescene investigators and police community support officers, you could work within the intelligence and analytical sector or as a community safety officer, probation officer, prison service or youth and anti-social behaviour worker.

A levels required; 2 A levels not subject specific
BTEC/Access required; A BTEC National or a full Access Certificate not subject specific.
GCSEs required; 3 GCSEs at grade C or above in English, Maths and Science.
