Course overview
Our course introduces you to the skills required for professionals in the built environment. The main focus is the underlying principles of construction technology, skills development and materials, properties and structures,and the context in which these are applied.
Employability is a key aspect in FdSc Civil Engineering. You will undertake real work projects either in the workplace (Workbased Learning) or through employer-led scenarios (Work-related Learning). The inclusion of real work projects should equip and assist you to enhance your employment opportunities, and/or allow you to prepare for a career change.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Mathematics, science and engineering
- Designing and conducting experiments, and the analysis and interpretation of data
- The functions and use of basic building and civil engineering components, and the properties of the materials from which they are made
- Designing a system, component, or process to meet desired needs
- Multi-disciplinary teams and identifying, formulating and solving engineering problems
- The hazards encountered with civil engineering work and the legislation surrounding health and safety in the
- The processing, use and presentation of analytical information, including a range of numerical methods for calculating, checking, presenting and communicating solutions to problems
- Professional and ethical responsibility
- The application of civil-engineering techniques (through a real work project).

Assessment
Assessment is via a mix of examination, timed assignments, group work and presentations, production of drawings, practical and laboratory work and in-class projects.Facilities

You are able to work in either a contracting or consulting civil engineering or related field. Our course provides a sound basis for students wishing to pursue further study towards Incorporated Engineer status. There are extensive worldwide opportunities for those achieving Incorporated Engineer status.Our civil engineering courses prepare you for an exciting career that enables you to take responsibility and authority in implementing the technical, economic, legal and managerial aspects of the construction industry.
If you have previously undertaken a Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering you have the opportunity to progress directly into the third year of the Foundation Degree.

Entry Requirements
80 UCAS tariff points.A levels required; 2 A levels in related subjects
BTEC/Access required; A BTEC National in a related subject
GCSEs required; 3 GCSEs at grade C or above in English, Maths and Science
Non-standard requirements; Please note AS levels are acceptable only when combined with other qualifications.
