Research degrees in graphic design and typography at Cambridge School of Art reflect the development of this subject area as an interest and a focus for doctoral research. A basis of staff expertise and research activity at national and international level, provides support for a diverse and inclusive culture of research. This draws upon a strong basis of staff professional practice and research activity, with a particular emphasis toward typography and related aspects of graphic practice.
Research students contextualise their research in relation to appropriate aspects of current critical debate and engage with contexts of production and dissemination at national and international level. They will contribute to the developing critical culture of the subject area through publication, exhibition and conference participation Cambridge School of Art provides various research forums that address the interdisciplinary nature of research, including the Typographic Research Group.
Staff have strong working links with Atypi, Typographic Research Initiative, Typecon (USA) and a range of critical and professional journals and professional organisations.
These subject-specific aspects of our research programme are enhanced and augmented by our University-wide research and training sessions.

- MPhil: Candidates must hold a BA or equivalent in a related subject area.
- PhD: Candidates should normally hold an MA or equivalent in a related area subject area.
For candidates whose first language is not English, a minimum IELTS score of 7 or equivalent is required with a minimum score of 6.5 achieved in each of the four language skills. We welcome applications from EU and international students.
