Otorhinolaryngology
PG Cert
Course overview
This module is specifically designed to help develop clinical decision making in Otorhinolaryngology and encourages critical understanding of the evidence behind the principles of Otorhinolaryngology Surgery.Additional course information
Ear, Nose and Throat surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, is a diverse surgical specialty that involves the management of both children and adults. In contrast to other surgical specialties the management of a significant number of conditions requires a non-surgical approach and hence an understanding of the pathogenesis and progression of pathology is essential for appropriate patient management.Whilst surgical techniques are taught as part of the registrar apprenticeship, clinical decision making varies and is dependent on the surgeon's understanding and experience. This module will enable students to develop their understanding of the basic sciences applicable to Otorhinolaryngology and hence allow them to develop an understanding and formulate appropriate management pathways when dealing with patients in a clinical setting. There is a strong emphasis on research and evidence based practice. Innovation, research and creativity will be fostered and students encouraged to evaluate, and to challenge, current practice to improve service delivery and effect change.
This module has been developed by a team of Consultant ENT surgeons specialising in each of the four subspecialties (Otology/Neuro-otology, Head and Neck surgery, Rhinology and Facial plastics, and Paediatric ENT Surgery).
The module will enable students to enhance and master the knowledge and skills to deliver safe and high quality care. Students will be educated in the basic sciences, and their subsequent application in the management of patients.
