Mobile Telecommunications
MSc
Course overview
Our course aims to make your postgraduate experience both challenging and rewarding, by working closely with industry to ensure that it is relevant to your career in mobile telecommunications.A variety of taught modules and a relevant project makes up this course, under the direction of one of our academic staff. The modules aim to give you a thorough grounding in the underlying techniques of modern wireless communications systems.
In addition, the course will:
- enable you to demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge and a critical awareness of current problems relating to the field of study of mobile telecommunication and its deployment in an organisation
- teach you to carry out the high-level design of secure mobile networking applications
- prepare you to assess, plan for, and use appropriate network development tools in the deployment of efficient enterprise-wide mobile networks
- enable you to define the goals, parameters and methodology of a research and development activity related to mobile networks serving information systems, and implement and evaluate this activity
- provide you with a thorough knowledge of modern mobile technologies, preparing you for a challenging, state-of-the-art career in the most rapidly growing area of telecommunications worldwide.
Module guide
Core modules
Advanced Mobile Systems
This module covers Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), 2.5G, 3G and 4G systems, as well as emerging new mobile systems and services.
IT Infrastructures
This module will introduce you to current best practice in the design, deployment and maintenance of an enterprise-wide IT infrastructure. You will cover the design of core IT infrastructures and will deploy network-management software to monitor the performance of the network and associated components.
Advanced Security Systems
This module covers information technology security when delivered by mobile systems, as well as the security coding, authentication and confidentiality of the voice and data.
Programming and Simulation
This module covers programming of mobile handsets and the programming of services at the transmission and switching level. The simulation will include instruction on how to build wideband mobile services at different generations on the computer screen using high-level simulation packages such as OPNET.
Advanced Project Management
This module focuses on the management issues system-building and service operation. This includes marketing and customer care and satisfaction methods in fiercely competitive environments.
Research Methods
This module will cover the evaluation of research techniques for postgraduate study
Postgraduate Major Project
Here, you will earn 60 credits through a case study with practical implementation, or research into different mobile-related quality and security issues with measurable parameters.
- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of network protocols and mobile policies within a network environment
- devise strategies to analyse, evaluate and optimise network performance
- evaluate the tools and techniques required to provide full and secure access to mobile networks
- identify the legislation relevant to mobile operations and understand the implications of non-compliance
- demonstrate an awareness of current research and developments within the discipline which you may then evaluate and critique
- recognise your obligations to function in a professional, moral and ethical way
- synthesize novel solutions to mobile networks design from a knowledge of current tools, methodologies and strategies
- critically survey current and recent practice in the networking field, identifying examples of best practice and generalising from them
- demonstrate the ability to manage a project through its life cycle
- define the goals, parameters and methodology of a research and development activity.
Assessment
For the Advanced Mobile Systems module, you will undertake course work and examinations respectively. The rest of the modules will be assessed on course-work only.Facilities
Our specialist facilities include wireless and mobile and electronic laboratories, simulation packages and programming and security laboratories.Links with industry and professional recognition
We currently have links with Segwell Ltd, Glazing Vision, Visteon, British Aerospace and EEV.Associated Careers
Graduates of our course will typically work in organisations as mobile network designers, mobile projects managers, wireless and mobile communication consultants, or within operations as a team leader. The skills that you acquire on our course will mean you will be likely to progress quickly to the position of a senior manager, leading a team of network architects or operations and support staff. Additionally, this course will equip you to work in a mobile communication customer-care setting.| Entry Requirements: | An honours degree (2:2 or above) in a Computing/IT subject; no work experience is required. If this qualification requirement is not met, an applicant may be accepted with an honours degree (2:2 or above) in any other subject if it is combined with relevant professional work experience. |
We welcome applications from International and EU students. Please select one of the links below for English language and country-specific entry requirement information.
