Military and Veteran Mental Health
MSc
Intermediate award(s): PG Dip, PG CertCourse overview
The MSc Military and Veteran Mental Health is delivered through a progression of courses based on a core curriculum which focuses on military structure, culture and values, including the deployment cycle, effects of traumatic exposure, adjustment to injury or civilian life, and reintegration with family/children and psychological and welfare interventions for serving personnel and veterans. There are three levels to choose from; Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters.
We have developed this course as there is a significant unmet need for progressive courses that can address education and training on military and veteran mental health. As a result, professionals working in the military, allied healthcare, administration, NHS and third sector will now have the opportunity to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work effectively with the military and veteran client population.
This course is eligible for Enhanced Learning Credits (ELCs).
Year One PG Cert core modules
Module 1: Military Life and Experience
This module is aimed at students who are or intend to work with clients/patients from the Military & Veteran community. It provides an overview of Military & Veteran life with an emphasis on deployment and its subsequent effects, both emotional and physical. The purpose of this module is to enable the student to achieve depth and breadth of both knowledge of Military Life and Experience and skill in the use of communication strategies. The course is facilitated through self-directed learning by interacting with on-line reading and activities. Students will also be allocated to a personal 'online' tutor.
Module 2: Transition and the Veteran Experience
This module provides an overview of the transition from Military to Veteran life with an emphasis on resettlement, reintegration and adjustment to civilian life and its subsequent effects, both emotional and physical. The purpose of this module is to enable the student to achieve both breadth and depth of knowledge of the transition from military to civilian life and the nature and variety of the veteran experience.
Year Two PG Dip core modules
Module 3: Military and Veteran Mental Health, Social Care and Welfare - Part 1
The two Postgraduate Diploma modules will build upon previous knowledge acquired from completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Military and Veteran Mental Health and will include a review of the deployment cycle in order to focus upon post deployment and other stress reactions and responses from a bio-psychosocial perspective. The student is moved onto reviewing and considering the epidemiology of post-traumatic stress disorder and other adjustment disorders resulting from deployment and introduced to the assessment of post trauma reactions, including depression and somatoform disorders, trauma focussed and other interventions available, including pharmacotherapy, and subsequent rehabilitation issues leading into a review of the wider issues impacting upon the veteran and family welfare needs.
Module 4: Military and Veteran Mental Health, Social Care and Welfare - Part 2
(Option 1 - students intending to complete the Masters award may substitute the Research Studies module at this stage and undertake this Part 2 module during the next stage). This module provides an overview of Military & Veteran life with a strong emphasis on prevalent subsequent psychological and physical effects with a continuing focus on: depression, chronic pain, phantom limb, adjustment disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger and substance misuse (This is not an exhaustive list of presentations). The purpose of this module is to enable the student to expand upon earlier theoretical knowledge gained in Postgraduate Diploma Part 1 and to enhance breadth and depth of theory, knowledge and skills in the use of evidence based treatment plans and protocol driven interventions, together with social and welfare interventions.
Year Three core modules / Masters core modules
Module 5: Research Studies
This module is designed to provide students with a critical overview of the main methodologies and designs applied to research within health and social care, professional practice, regulation and policy. It provides students with an opportunity to explore the theoretical dilemmas which underlie the process of inquiry and its relationship to practice. The module will provide a framework within which to select, evaluate and justify the research methods chosen by students for their research project. The module requires the students to prepare and write a research proposal which will normally lead to a level 7 dissertation. Hence prior knowledge of some research approaches at level 6 is normally expected. The research module is taken by students on a variety of award courses. Learning will usually be with a group of students who bring different academic and/or professional interests to their study, thus providing a community of collaborative learning well suited to interdisciplinary exploration.
Module 6: Postgraduate Major Project
The Dissertation is of central importance to the student's Masters Award during which the student will be expected to bring together aspects of learning from previous modules as well as using this learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing up a research or work based project. This module will support students in the preparation and submission of a Masters Level Dissertation (either research projects or work-based project). There will be eight hours of workshop support available to students during this module. This will be delivered as four two-hour workshops. In addition, there will be a full-day Introductory Workshop before the module commences. Students will also be allocated a minimum of 6 hours of individual supervisory support with additional supervisory support negotiated with between the student and the supervisor.
Assessment
The first two modules will be assessed through a construction and assimilation of 'patchwork' texts, this assessment structure has been chosen and designed to assist students with the management of their written submission(s). A patchwork refers to a singular piece of work and a patchwork text is a series of separate pieces of work that are 'sewn' together at the end, this is linked to the structure of the module.Students should demonstrate an ability to write with a high level of critical analysis, to argue points from various perspectives and to demonstrate an ability to synthesise their ideas into practice.
The Diploma level modules will be assessed through fine-graded essays and the Masters level project will be assessed through the submission of a written dissertation.
Facilities
As this is a distance and blended learning course students will have access to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) sites, were all course documentation will be uploaded. Students will also be given access to a wide range of e-learning activities in order to enhance their learning experience.Special features
Students will be encouraged to learn through structured, supported and self-directed methods that follow a guided and monitored protocol. Access to online workbooks and activities (e-tivities), cohort discussion on an online café and tutorials with appointed personal tutor are the main framework for this delivery with the self-directed learning increasing towards the end of the module. The University VLE will support all online activity. The blended learning delivery at Diploma level has been drawn upon and developed to build upon the student's interaction with knowledge and practical skills.
The modules have been designed so that the theoretical knowledge may be attained through self-directed learning and integrated into the students' work through attendance at face to face lectures and experiential practice sessions held during the 12 week semester.
It is intended to facilitate the workshops over two separate week periods enabling those currently employed to condense the time taken off work and causing minimal disruption to self, family and employers.
Associated careers
For those students who leave with the PG Cert it is anticipated that they will have altered their perceptions of the services for which they take some responsibility. Where they have existing clinical roles this will allow them to think differently about both the client group and their choice of helping strategies. They will gain increased ability to focus on the specialist experience of the client group and to adjust services where necessary.Students completing the PG Diploma should focus on the development of strategies that guide choices about services so that resources can be used most effectively to help clients. They should advise senior managers and present arguments that persuade colleagues and sponsors to provide services for veteran clients that optimise the most effective outcomes. Such students will certainly be able to retain or apply for senior roles and to offer a specialist resource that contributes to offering the right clinical services packaged to achieve the best possible results for individual clients and client populations.
At Masters level students will contribute to extension of knowledge in the area of veteran mental health and undertake research that will have benefits for services and client outcomes. Career paths may be either towards service management or as specialist practitioner / researcher.
