Course overview

This course helps equip experienced, qualified social workers with academic and professional 'mastery' of social work with mental health services; enabling and facilitating others, providing consultancy, demonstrating a high level of capability - including in statutory mental health services - and a critical in-depth knowledge of the subject area. In addition students will learn comprehensive research skills and an ability to influence and promote change in their organisations and in other professions.

Additional course information

The course content will include theories, applied skills and decision making around issues of mental health, safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults; social work with those who use mental health services; and management in contexts of risk, uncertainty, conflict and complex challenges. This course will also cover planning and undertaking a research / project dissertation.

Assessment

A combination of assignments (essays), patchwork text, evaluative report, presentation, portfolio and dissertation.

Links with industry and professional recognition

Students who successfully complete the course will have a PQ Advanced level accredited by the GSCC (General Social Care Council).

Work placements

A 40 day placement, normally in another team within own agency.

Associated careers

Successful completion of the course will allow consolidation in the student's current position and offer them the opportunity to progress to higher level posts. It may also provide access to academic / research posts. It will also provide CPD evidence for GSCC re-registration.

Entry Requirements: Must hold a degree or equivalent qualification. An equivalent qualification could be PQ1 or DipHe. Must be a registered social worker, occupational therapist, nurse or psychologist; and must be nominated by their employer
