International Sustainable Tourism Management
MA
Intermediate award(s): PG Dip, PG CertCourse overview
In the 21st century sustainability and social and corporate responsibility have increasingly moved to the centre of the practices of tourism in a wide variety of ways. This is a reflection of tourism's growth and it's ability to bring both pleasures and problems to destinations and its inhabitants. This course draws on best practices within the broad realm of the tourism business, policy and research to develop a critical understanding of the relationships between tourism and sustainable development in a wide variety of geographical regions around the world.Effective planning and policy making for international tourism, and for the management of environmental, socio-cultural and economic consequences, requires well qualified managers with a broad and deep understanding of global business activity, and of the conceptual and applied issues involving tourism and sustainability issues. Sustainability represents an increasingly influential facet of the tourism business, tourism planning, development and management, encompassing all sectors of the industry. This course addresses tourism's potential to be compatible with the achievement of a range of objectives, including developing sustainable organisations, urban and rural regeneration, community-based wildlife conservation, and diversifying benefits from international and domestic tourism. In doing so, it facilitates the development of skills and techniques to develop tourism policies and practices in a global setting and to manage tourism development and enterprises in the direction of more sustainable practice.
Through an examination of best practices, problem solving, field work, and other approaches, the course aims to broaden the horizons of what is possible in terms of how tourism may be organised in more sustainable terms, of what the United Nations World Tourism Organizaition term a 'quadruple bottom line'.
It is aimed at those who are wishing to enter a career or further develop an existing career, in the broad tourism industry. It will also benefit those wishing to develop tourism expertise in complementary areas such as conservation and wildlife management, rural development, urban and cultural tourism management, community tourism development and more.
