Overview

The course provides a combination of theory and practical application which is relevant to international legal practice and business in the context of advanced intellectual engagement with issues in law and legal theory. It also considers law in relation to associated disciplines such as international governance. Completion of this course will provide you with an understanding of the international context background and legal expertise for of the law which is highly relevant to international practice, academic research and other intellectually demanding roles.

The LLM is available at our Cambridge campus as a one-year, full-time, taught degree completed by a supervised dissertation.

The course is divided into three periods:

For September starters:
  • In the first semester (September to December) there are two 15-credit core modules and one 30-credit optional module.
  • In the second semester (January to June) two 15-credit core modules are studied plus one 30-credit optional module.
  • During the summer, independent research is undertaken for the dissertation, worth 60 credits.

For January starters:
  • In the first semester (January to June) there are two 15-credit core modules and one 30-credit optional module.
  • In the second semester (September to December) two 15-credit core modules are studied plus one 30-credit optional module.
  • At the end of the course, independent research is undertaken for the dissertation, worth 60 credits.

Module guide

Core modules
  • Business Law in the Global Context

    This module provides the introductory foundation for further study on the course, enabling you to develop an understanding of the context in which international business takes place and to develop the research skills appropriate at postgraduate level

  • International Trade Law

    This module focuses on the legal and commercial rules and conventions governing international sales contracts and accompanying documentation, carriage of goods by sea, and financing international trade. It develops problem-solving, research, written analytical and critical-thinking skills.

  • Dispute Resolution

    This module examines methods of alternative dispute resolution together with substantive and procedural aspects of business litigation in the worldwide context. It combines theory and practical application relevant to international legal practice and business.

  • International Law Research

    This module is focused on an understanding and analysis of research methodologies and their application to the legal context. Throughout this module you will encounter a range of research activities and consider how these may not only influence your own academic research but also make a significant contribution to professional practice. The approach taken within this module is one which underpins the major dissertation and therefore offers an opportunity to discuss how research may be undertaken through the application of appropriate methodology

  • Dissertation

    This module will support you in the preparation and submission of a Masters dissertation and will provide you with an opportunity to explore in depth, a particular aspect of international business law which reflects your academic interest.

In addition to teaching time on-campus, all courses require intensive self-guided learning, research or private study and there may also be optional training, seminars, visits, lectures or master classes to attend.

Assessment

You will be assessed each semester. All modules are assessed using a variety of forms. The method of assessment will be explained at the start of each module. Assessment may be by term paper, seminar performance, unseen problem, a timed paper or oral presentation. Each assessment will be marked as a percentage.

Successful students will graduate with a distinction, merit or pass in accordance with Anglia Ruskin University's Assessment Regulations.

This has enhanced my educational experience and enabled me to explore and appreciate different cultures. Throughout the course I have received excellent support from my lecturers. This has been very important because English is not my first language. The course will no doubt enhance my employment opportunities. The University has also provided me with other employment-enhancing opportunities: Eversheds, the third largest Law Firm in the world, is acting as my mentor; I am also working as a volunteer in the Citizens Advice Bureau.”

Facilities

The LLM is taught at our Cambridge campus in East Road where we have modern teaching facilities and a mock courtroom.

Libraries
Our campus libraries offer a wide range of publications and a variety of study facilities, including open-access computers, areas for quiet or group study and bookable rooms. We also have an extensive Digital Library providing on and off-site access to e-books, e-journals and databases.

We endeavour to make our libraries as accessible as possible for all our students. During Semester time, they open 24 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, until midnight on Friday and Saturday and for 12 hours on Sunday.

IT resources
Our open access computer facilities provide free access to the internet, email, messaging services and the full Microsoft Office suite. A high speed wireless service is also available in all key areas on campus. If you are away from campus or a distant learner, our student desktop and its many applications can be accessed remotely using the internet. Your personal student email account provides free document storage, calendar facilities and social networking opportunities.

Throughout your studies you will have access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), providing course notes, reading materials and multi-media content to support your learning, while our e-vision system gives you instant access to your academic record and your timetable.

Entry Requirements: Usually a 2:2 honours degree classification (or equivalent) in Law or a degree with an element of Law. Candidates for whom English is not a first language will be expected to demonstrate a certified level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent with no individual score lower than 6.
