Course overview

The human resource manager of the future will be concerned with the wider issues of organisational effectiveness in increasingly globalised markets, where the impact of managerial decisions has major ramifications for the effectiveness of the organisation. In a world which is changing rapidly and where stability is a thing of the past, the human resource (HR) manager will be central to the proactive management of the workforce, operating from a strategic viewpoint in terms of the future structure and functioning of the organisation.

  • Human Resource Management in Context

    This module is concerned with the environment in which organisations operate, and how organisations have to respond to the very dynamic environment which they operate in.

  • Resourcing and Talent Management

    This module is very much at the heart of Human Resource Management as organisations can only function if they are able to assemble together the rights teams of people with the necessary skills, attitudes and talents to meet their objectives. It reflects on how organisations have to compete for the best available talent, particularly when demand exceeds supply.

  • Leading, Managing and Developing People

    This module will provide you with a rigorous framework for knowledge and understanding, concerning people management and development.

  • Developing Skills for Business Leadership

    Here, you will develop the skills that are pivotal to successful management practice and effective leadership. The module includes not only essential people-management skills, but also develops knowledge to enable the interpretation of financial information and managing of financial resources, along with IT proficiency.

  • Employment Law and Relations

    This is a double module incorporating key legal knowledge in the employment sphere, and also the core knowledge regarding managing the employment relationship, including handling the difficult employment relation problems that frequently arise in organisations.

  • Designing, Delivering and Evaluating Learning and Development

    This module will introduce you to an established body of knowledge and theory on learning processes and their application in instructional design and facilitating learning - including the design and delivery of learning and development plans and events.

  • International and Comparative Human Resource Management

    Within this module you will learn about the needs and interests of senior leaders in global enterprises. It will provide for HR practitioners who understand and can critically appraise HR issues in multinational firms. This module aims to help those who intend to seek a career in international corporations.

  • Research methods in an International Context and the Postgraduate Major Project

    This is a block study module which underpins, and leads directly into, the culmination of your studies on the Masters course through a major project. This is an independent study which will enable you to demonstrate your ability to research, diagnose and investigate a live issue within the subject area of Human Resource Management.

Assessment

The course is assessed through written work or group and individual presentations as appropriate. For the final two modules, Research Methods and Postgraduate Major Project, the first is a written proposal for the Postgraduate Major Project module, which is an opportunity for you to demonstrate, through a written assessment, your ability to conduct research and apply human resource practices to a key issue in HR.

Entry Requirements: UK degree at a minimum of lower second-class honours or equivalent overseas qualification. Candidates who do not possess these entry criteria, but can demonstrate appropriate relevant experience in a post of management or professional responsibility, may be admitted if, in the opinion of the Admissions Tutor, they are capable of profiting from and contributing to the programme.
