Course overview
This course will develop your knowledge and skills in the fields of management and construction management, and will provide the specialist knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage construction projects.It is designed for built environment graduates and professionals who wish to enter a career in construction management, or to further an existing career in construction management. It provides a toolkit of key management skills which will equip you to undertake a variety of roles in the field of construction management, or other management roles in the construction sector.
The course has a strong management theme, together with specialist modules in construction management techniques, with an overarching emphasis on practical application to the management of construction projects. The course recognises that every manager has their own unique approach to construction management which we encourage you to develop
This course develops a comprehensive understanding of the role of the construction manager throughout the construction process. Emphasis is placed on the development of skills to lead and manage teams and to identify, synthesize and implement innovative managerial, organisational and technological solutions to construction-related problems.
This course will:
- equip you with the broad range of management and technical skills required to manage construction projects
- develop your individual knowledge base and approach to the management of construction projects
- demonstrate the practical application of construction management techniques
- meet the increasing demand for qualified construction managers from construction firms, both nationally and internationally
- meet the requirements for professional construction managers in a wide range of construction organisations and to meet the specific requirements for professional construction managers, specified by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- plan, organise and manage the construction process
- demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of the context, factors and issues that affect construction
- apply an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of health and safety issues and how to effectively manage these in a construction context
- select and apply appropriate management approaches and techniques to construction
- develop and implement both recognised and innovative solutions to problems in construction
- recognise the environmental implications and considerations that influence construction
- understand professional and ethical standards and know how to apply ethical values to situations and choices.

Core modules
Management Theory
This module is designed to facilitate each student's development of their own individual knowledge base and approach to management. Its aim is to get students to develop their own particular approach to management by establishing a solid foundation of management knowledge and integrating this with their own values, experiences and goals, to provide the basis for a life-long development of their management skills. It is based on a thorough understanding of the theories and practice of management, reinforced by examples of best practice drawn from a wide range of organisations, together with an appreciation of the context and constraints that influence organisations and management. The module will consider the main activities of management from an integrating perspective, together with identifying and developing the qualities required for a successful manager, including leadership. Organisations form the focus of management, consequently the module will develop a sound understanding of the functions, forms, operation and behaviour of organisations in a variety of contexts and situations, together with an appreciation of how all aspects of management are integrated in the management of organisations. Students will examine and critically evaluate examples of good management and bad management, with regard to developing workable solutions that can be applied to management situations and to facilitate the application of management principles and practice to their own field of work.
Management Practice
This Module recognises the importance of people to the success of organisations and that organisational performance is largely dependent on the performance of its human resources, which in turn is determined by the quality and effectiveness of their management. This module is designed to enable each student to develop their own individual knowledge base and approach to effectively manage human resources, by establishing a solid foundation of human resource management knowledge and integrating this with your own values, experiences and goals to provide the basis for the life-long development of management skills. It is based on a thorough understanding of the theories, principles and practice of human resource management together with critical evaluation of examples of human resource management from a wide variety of situations. The module emphasises the development of the personal skills and traits required to successfully manage human resources, together with effective knowledge management to maximise their success in a knowledge-based economy.
Production Management
This module will provide an in-depth consideration of the specialist methods and applications required to manage modern, complex and fast-paced construction projects, including CIT systems.
Procurement and Supply Chain Management
This module will provide an in-depth consideration of the principles and practices of procurement across a wide range of different approaches and situations, including direct and integrated approaches such as supply chain management and partnering.
Sustainability and Environmental Management
Here, you will look at wider developments in environmental protection, how these affect construction, and how construction affects them. It examines the demands that greater environmental awareness places on the built environment.
Project Analysis and Strategy
This module will examine a wide range of construction projects to see how the principles and practices learned during the course have been selected, adapted and applied in practice.
Economic, Legal and Political Framework
The wider context in which construction exists and from which it derives significant influence is provided by this module, together with an understanding of the influence and responsibilities that construction managers have on the wider environment.
Research Design and Methods
This module will provide a sound understanding of the research process and a range of research methods that will prepare you to undertake your dissertation.
Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)
Our module provides the opportunity for you to identify and pursue a topic relevant to construction management that is of interest, and in which you can develop a significant level of expertise.
Assessment
Assessment is diverse to reflect the scope and aims of the course. You can expect to be assessed by a combination of assignments, case studies, examinations, group work and presentations.Special features
The modules establish a framework for the management of construction projects and develop a comprehensive understanding of the role and functions of the construction manager.They are delivered by a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops and seminars by specialists in their field. Throughout the course the learning strategy is to develop an extensive and sound theoretical knowledge base together with the ability to apply it to construction management.
Case studies are used to reinforce and develop your application of construction management theory and skills. The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is used to support your learning providing access to teaching materials and electronic resources (including our electronic library) to communicate with tutors and receive tutor feedback, and to enable you to submit work electronically.
The ethos of the course is to develop a strong management theme, it recognises that management is unique to every individual manager and encourages you to develop your own critically informed approach to management.
Teams and their management are recognise to be key to successful construction management, consequently a number of the modules emphasise the development of the skills required to lead and manage teams, together with those to identify, synthesise and implement innovative management, organisational and technological solutions to construction management-related problems.

Construction management is a dynamic and challenging field; it offers exciting opportunities in a variety of organisations. Successful candidates can expect to be involved in a wide range of management roles in the field of construction, as well as other management roles in the construction sector.| Entry Requirements: | ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: A 2:2 honours degree in Construction Management or another appropriate Built Environment subject; OR Graduate Certificate in Construction Management awarded by Anglia Ruskin University; OR CIOB Graduate Diploma; OR Membership at an appropriate level of a recognised construction institution, such as RIBA, RICS,CIOB, ICE. A non-cognate honours degree (2.2 or above) together with relevant post graduate working experience will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants may be invited for interview. |
