Course overview

The MCh Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery aims to meet the personal, professional and educational requirements of Surgeons continuing their professional development within the clinical field of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery. It will enable students to develop their knowledge, extend and advance their clinical practice in order to achieve breadth and depth to their clinical competence. This course is endorsed by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Within the module content there is a strong emphasis on research and evidence-based practice of this development in clinical practice. Furthermore, innovation, research and creativity will be fostered in order to enable students to evaluate and influence practice. Thus improving service delivery and effect change.

In addition, the pathway aims to critically evaluate the relationship between evidence based medicine and professional development necessary for lifelong learning. Critical enquiry will be built on inter-professional learning platforms to enable students to actively contribute to the emerging body of underpinning evidence within professional practice.

Clinicians will be required to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public, by establishing and maintaining high standards for the education, examination and certification of plastic surgeons in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Additional course information

This course enables qualified Plastic Surgeons to gain full time experience in the field of cosmetic/aesthetic surgery enabling them to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to become adept at undertaking these types of surgical procedures. This will enable them to develop their private practice with regard to cosmetic surgery giving them a reputable qualification providing patients with assurance that their surgeon is properly trained and competent. The MCh in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Practice (PASP) aims to meet the personal, professional and educational requirements of surgeons. It also aims to enable surgeons to develop their knowledge and extend and advance their practice to achieve competence in plastic and aesthetic surgery, providing them with the breadth and depth of experience. The course provides a strong emphasis on research and the evaluation and development of practice. Innovation, research and creativity will be fostered in order to enable surgeons to evaluate and influence practice, to improve service delivery and effect change.

  • Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Practice (60 credits at Level 7)

    This module will enable you to enhance and master the knowledge and skills to deliver safe and high quality aesthetic plastic surgery. You will be educated in the art of undertaking consultations that take into consideration the potential vulnerability of clients seeking and undergoing plastic and aesthetic surgery. Over a six month period, you will undertake one-to-one supervision with a qualified Consultant Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon who is a registered member of UKAAPS. During this time you will encapsulate your medical knowledge, interpersonal skills and professional standards through verbal communication, written documentation and collation of photographic evidence to support individualised patient care. In order to undertake this module you must be working in the field of aesthetic and plastic surgery and be fully accredited and registered with the GMC with a Plastic Surgery qualification or equivalent. You must hold your own indemnity insurance and you are advised to be a member of either UKAAPS or British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). Assessment for the module will be through two viva examinations each covering seven case studies of aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures which may be undertaken from a set list of 14 procedures. You will also be expected to maintain a log of a minimum of 30 case studies of aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures undertaken during this module.

  • Research Studies (30 credits level 7)

    This module encourages you to consider critically different types of evidence and use appropriate critical frameworks in assessing your relevance to policy and practice. It supports and always precedes the compulsory Major Project, enabling you to gain the knowledge and skills to conduct research in your own specialist area. While on this course, you will work with your preceptor in deciding a suitable topic area for your research project. This module will be delivered via distance learning.

  • Major Project (60 credits level 7)

    Here, you will undertake a substantial piece of research in the area of your own practice. Graduates of this course have already produced some excellent pieces of research, some of which have been published. The focus of the Major Project can be either: a research Major Project in which you can investigate an issue within the sphere of practice. This can include: a qualitative study; a quantitative study; a study using a mixed method approach; experimental research; action research; or, a systematic review. Alternatively it can be a work-based Major Project designed to effect change within your organisation. This can include: an audit; service evaluation; evidence-based practice project; or any other work-based project that is not classed as 'research'. You will work with your preceptor in deciding a suitable topic area for your Dissertation. Your preceptor will also act as your first supervisor with a member from the academic team as your second supervisor.

Assessment

Assessment for the module will be through two viva examinations each covering seven case studies of aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures which may be undertaken from a set list of 14 procedures. The candidate will also be expected to maintain a log of a minimum of 30 case studies of aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures undertaken during the module.

Additional assessment information

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Practice
  • A 40-minute viva will examine the seven defined case studies/reports from the practice component which you submit (equivalent to 2,000 words).
  • A portfolio containing evidence of 30 relevant case studies including the 14 compulsory procedures. This must also contain a log book of the cases you have undertaken (equivalent to 8,000 words).

Research Studies
  • A written assignment: Literature review and research proposal (8,000 words).

Advancing Professional Decision Making
  • An essay submitted at week six (3,000 words).
  • A critical appraisal submitted at week 15 (5,000 words).

Major Project
  • A report or research/work-based project up to 15,000 words to include critical discussion of application to practice and critical reflection.

Candidates must hold their own Indemnity insurance and are advised to be a member of either UKAAPS or British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

Work placements

Over a 6 month period candidates will undertake one to one supervision with a qualified Consultant Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon who is a registered member of UKAAPS. During this time candidates will encapsulate their medical knowledge, interpersonal skills and professional standards through, verbal communication, written documentation and collation of photographic evidence to support individualised patient care.

Entry requirements

In order to undertake this module candidates must be a qualified surgeon working in the field of aesthetic or plastic surgery and be fully accredited and registered with the GMC (Post Completion Core Training) with a plastic surgery qualification (FRCS Plast) or equivalent.

Candidates must hold Practicing Privileges at a private hospital facility to undertake the PG Cert.

Candidates must hold their own indemnity insurance and are advised to be a member of either UKAAPS or British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).
