In the light of the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services, the rationale of the module is to enhance the practitioners critical understanding of substance abuse in parents.
It will also raise your ability to recognise and respond appropriately to the effects of substance abuse on families both in the short term and the long term. It will help you understand the support that is needed by a child and its family when substance dependence is part of their physical, social or psychological requirements.
The module will also explore agencies available to assist and support the children, families and the practitioners.

Programme content
- An in-depth insight into the physical effects of alcohol, cigarette smoking, chemical abuse and recreational drugs
- An examination of the effects of the above on the pregnant woman and her children
- The social construct and the effects within the family and other relationships, where substance abuse is present
- The evidence that provides the practitioner with an understanding of the social, physical, emotional and other causes of substance abuse by parents
- Child protection and protection of children
- Agencies and specialists that provide essential information for the professional and family
- The preparation of appropriate care pathways for the family
Target audience
This module is designed for a multi-professional audience whose work relates to substance abusing parents.Assessment
Contribution to VLE: Online contributions will explore the issues surrounding substance misuse in families.Written Exploration of care pathways: You will explore care pathways, and recommendations for practice appropriate to your profession. A summary of your work must be included for dissemination on VLE to your group (maximum of 3,000 words of the total word limit).
