Spirituality in the Healthcare Context
Level 6
15 Credits
Concern for spirituality and spiritual care have increased dramatically in the last decade. This is particularly true for palliative care, where the hope of a curative intervention is replaced by concern to improve the quality of remaining life and work for a 'good' death.
This module aims to critically examine the notion of spirituality and tease-out the dimensions of good spiritual care. Accomplishing these tasks will require that students reflect upon their own spirituality, and contemplate the elements that contribute towards a good spiritual wellbeing. Within the context of holism, there are many aspects of the person that impact upon spiritual wellbeing, ranging from, love and relatedness to self and others, to relationships with a deity or a sense of connected-ness with nature and the universe.
In thinking about spirituality students will contemplate the extent to which they might support and encourage patients in seeking to transcend the decline of their physical body and find peace and healing as they come to the end of their mortal life.
