Principles of Conscious Sedations for Health Care Professionals

This distance learning module is designed to examine the theory and practice of clinical conscious sedation. The module is underpinned by the clinical experience of the student. This requires students to be working with patients under conscious sedation. Students will be expected to analyse, discuss and evaluate the theory and their own clinical practice, specifically relating to protocols, patient management and contemporary techniques. It is expected that the student will assess current protocols for discussion and evaluation.
Outline of content
- Appropriate use of protocols for conscious sedation
- Pharmacological knowledge to support clinical practice
- Patient management in the pre-assessment, delivery and after care of clinical procedures involving conscious sedation
- Patient safety considerations when using conscious sedation
- Competence to administer conscious sedation to patients/clients
- Professional issues: requirements of contemporary clinical practice; role of the literature; informed consent; evidence based practice, audit, continued professional development, updating of clinical skills.
Entry requirements
The primary target audience for this module is Registered Health Care Practitioners undertaking procedures under conscious sedation - e.g Imaging nurses, Endoscopy nurses, A&E nurses, Radiographers, Dental practitioners Registered Operating Department Practitioners & Medical/dental Staff. The course materials are generically composed to allow this access.Your current employer must have a written protocol in place that you must attach to your application. If this is not in place your application will be declined.
It is anticipated that students will have post registration experience. Students must have current Intermediate Life Support (ILS), be practising intravenous drug administration & cannulation in their working environment and be working with patients under conscious sedation on frequent basis.
Assessment
Assessment for the module will be via a case study and clinical competencies.
