Respiratory Management in Primary and Secondary Care

Level 6

15 Credits

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which encompasses both chronic bronchitis and mphysema, is one of the commonest respiratory conditions of adults in the developed world. COPD is a progressive disease characterised by airflow obstruction which is not fully reversible. It is projected to become the 3rd leading cause of death in the UK by 2020. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease poses an enormous burden to society both in terms of direct cost to healthcare services and indirect costs to society through loss of productivity.

In addition Asthma is a respiratory disease which currently affects approximately 5 million people in the UK, with approximately 1,400 people dying of asthma each year in the UK. When poorly managed asthma has a detrimental effect on individuals lives affecting ability to work, study and enjoy leisure activities.

COPD and Asthma are associated with differing inflammatory processes, requiring disease specific approaches to management. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence have recently produced guidelines for the management of these diseases and it is essential that health care practitioners are aware of these to ensure the delivery of high quality care.

The health resources of an individual may be challenged by the presence of these diseases which create a demand for specialist health management. The complex nature of associated respiratory distress and failure requires the health professional to develop specialist knowledge and skills to care for the individual both in the acute stage and long term. Awareness of causative factors and health promotion strategies are essential.

This module will enable the practitioner to apply this specialist research based knowledge and skills to the individual within both the hospital and community setting.
