Principles of Respiratory and Thoracic Care

Level 6

30 Credits

Respiratory diseases are a major concern for the NHS and patients in England. It has the second highest death rate in the UK and in Europe (DoH 2011, BLF 2011). One person in every seven in the UK is affected by lung disease; this equates to approximately 8 million people (BLF 2011).

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is thought to affect more than three million people in England and is the 5th. biggest killer in the UK (DoH 2011). 3 people a day die from Asthma (Asthma UK 2011). It also represents a huge cost for the NHS and for patients. together COPD and asthma cost the NHS more than £2 billion a year and COPD alone is responsible for 24 million lost working days (DoH 2011).

According to BLF (2011), respiratory disease is on the rise in the UK. Whilst death rates from respiratory disease in the UK have decreased by 40% since 1970, there is little improvement since 1984. The DoH suggests that it is due to a lack of recognition of symptoms this leads to late diagnosis and poor outcomes; one in eight adults aged over 35 has COPD that has not been diagnosed (DoH 2011). More people are admitted to hospital in an emergency for respiratory diseases than anything else.

This demonstrates how respiratory illness is complex, requiring specific responses in prevention, management and treatment. The impact of lung disease has an effect not only on the patient but also their carers and the NHS.
