Promotion of Continence and Management of Incontinence

Level 6

30 Credits

Incontinence affects over three million people in the UK. Although often mistakenly associated with older people, it is not specific to any single client group. Whilst the promotion of continence is the prime objective, it cannot realistically always be achieved. Therefore, it is essential to provide appropriate incontinence management and support for those affected.

The module explores the physical, psychological and social factors that influence the promotion and management of continence/incontinence. It also challenges the negative attitudes associated with the stigma of incontinence, and aims to equip you with the evidence-based knowledge and skills required to meet the varying needs of patients and their carers.

Target audience

Open to all Nurses, Midwives, Health Visitors, Professions allied to Medicine and staff/carers in the social care sector.

Assessment

Methods include lectures and presentations from clinical experts, discussions and shared learning
Assessment is through production of an essay/project of the student's choice (up to 6,000 words level 6). This will be based on a continence assessment and critical analysis of care and offers the opportunity to integrate theory and practice.
