  • To prepare nurses without a specialist practice qualification to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively from the nurse prescribers formulary for community practitioners.
  • To provide an opportunity for inter-professional students to debate, analyse and synthesise key issues within safe prescribing practice and its contribution to health care.

Nurses and midwives should be assessed by their employer as competent at history taking, assessment and diagnosis, or if not should concurrently undertake a module to meet this requirement Applicants must be able to demonstrate appropriate numeric skills The student should identify a qualified practising prescriber who has agreed to provide 65 hours of clinical supervision.

Students will be integrated with those undertaking the V300 non medical prescribing module (as per the NMC requirements). The assessment process uses the stated standards of the regulatory body - (NMC 2006), assessing integrated theory and practice.

  • The practice assessment will be undertaken in the practice area and requires completion of 65 hours clinical supervision, supervised by a currently practising prescriber.

The theory assessment will consist of:

  • A 1½ hour examination which will assess pharmacology, calculations and wider prescribing issues using MCQ and short answer questions. The examination pass mark will be 70%.
  • 2500 word analysis of a prescribing episode demonstrating integration of theory and practice and development as a safe competent prescriber.

  • Consultation, history taking, diagnosis, decision-making and theory, including referral
  • Influences on and psychology of prescribing
  • Prescribing in a team context and sharing information
  • Clinical pharmacology, including the effects of co-morbidity
  • Evidence based practice and clinical governance in relation to nurse/midwife prescribing
  • Legal, policy and ethical aspects of prescribing
  • Professional accountability and responsibility
  • Prescribing in the public health context
