Perioperative Advances in Safe & Effective Patient Care
Level 6
30 Credits
The aim of this module is to explore the ever changing roles and responsibilities of experienced qualified perioperative practitioners. The module encourages advancing clinical skills and critical understanding of contemporary evidence based practice. It allows the students to develop the knowledge and skills they have to be able to function independently or as a member of the multidisciplinary team. The students will explore contemporary issues within the operating room environment through a combined process of reflection, critical thinking and incident analysis looking at the interventions which promote patient safety and well being throughout the surgical process. In addition, the module explores human factors and the social processes by which people interact in group environments, and how these can be heavily influenced by individual and cultural personalities and behaviours.
Entry requirements
This module is designed to meet the needs of Registered Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners and other registered health care practitioners currently employed in the surgical scrub perioperative phase. It is anticipated that students will have a minimum of 2 years post registration theatre experience and can demonstrate current experience in the scrub role. This is to ensure that they come to the programme with an appropriate understanding of this role.Assessment
The assessment of the module is in the form of a 3,000 word essay and clinical competencies.
