Pain & Symptom Management in Palliative Care

The management of pain and symptoms is central to good palliative care. The module will provide students with the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of effective pain and symptom relief strategies. The concept of total pain will also be considered, as will the associated notion of suffering.

The module will include information upon pharmacological and will highlight the value of the multi-disciplinary team. The module is designed for practitioners who work with palliative care patients in any clinical and/or supportive care setting:

  • To critically apply in-depth knowledge to the management of pain and symptoms in far advanced cancer/palliative care.
  • Critically discuss, knowledgeably and accurately, pain and symptom management with members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Generate strategies to improve the quality of life of dying patients.
  • Provide a focal point of resource in terminal care/palliative care provision in his/her practice area.

Outline content

  • The use of opiate analgesia in palliative care
  • The management of nausea and vomiting
  • Respiratory symptoms and their palliation
  • The management of other refractory symptoms
  • Total Pain
  • Suffering

Assessment

The module will be taught by a multi-professional team. The module will be assessed by completion of a competency portfolio.
