Patient Care in the Operating Room

The module is designed to provide you with a theoretical knowledge base in order to develop competence and expertise in the practical areas of theatre practice, including 'scrub' and 'circulating' duties in the operating room. Operating room practice involves understanding anatomy and physiology and being able to apply knowledge to practice within the surgical setting.

It aims help you to develop the specialist skills and knowledge necessary to perform effectively within the context of a multi-disciplinary team. You will learn in the classroom and in the practice area. You will also be required to undertake sufficient practice placement, so that you can adequately address the learning outcomes.

Entry Requirements

It is anticipated that students will have six months experience working within the operating room environment to ensure that they come to the programme with an appropriate understanding of this environment.

Assessment

A 3000 word critical analysis and a portfolio of 3000 words approx.

Target Audience

This module is designed to meet the needs of Registered Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners and other health care practitioners who participate in the care of patients in the operating room.
