Non Medical Prescribing

Level 6

30 Credits

Following successful completion of this module, qualified Nurses and Pharmacists are now able to prescribe any licensed medicine for any medical condition within their competence, including some Controlled Drugs.

A chiropodist, podiatrist, radiographer or physiotherapist registered with the HPC may also undertake training to qualify as a supplementary prescriber.

Target audience

Admission to the module is dependent on the following criteria:

  • Three years qualified for nurses & AHPs, two years for pharmacists with professional registration
  • A clinical need for prescribing
  • Sufficient knowledge of the practice area in which prescribing will take place
  • A current Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check

Nurses and midwives should be assessed by their employer as competent at history taking, assessment and diagnosis, or if not, should undertake a module to meet this requirement at the same time.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate appropriate numerical skills.

Assessment

A combination of unseen examination, prescribing episodes and practice assessment.
