The educational programme aims:
Admission to the module is dependent on the following criteria:
Nurses and midwives should be assessed by their employer as competent at history taking, assessment and diagnosis, or if not should concurrently undertake a module to meet this requirement. Applicants must be able to demonstrate appropriate numeric skills. The student should identify a designated medical supervisor who meets the Department of Health (2006) requirements, prior to commencement of the programme and should be allocated 78 hours of clinical supervision time (90 hours for a pharmacist).
- To prepare nurses, midwives, specialist community public health nurses and pharmacists to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively as independent and supplementary prescribers OR
- To prepare allied health professionals to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively as supplementary prescribers AND
- To provide an opportunity for inter-professional students to debate, analyse and synthesise key issues within safe prescribing practice and it's contribution to health care
Admission to the module is dependent on the following criteria:
- 3 years qualified for nurses & AHPs, 2 years for pharmacists with professional registration
- A UK Honours Degree or an academic or professional qualification approved by the Senate as equivalent in breadth and depth to a UK Honours Degree (Anglia Ruskin Academic Regulations, Version 3.0, July 2006)
- A clinical need for prescribing
- Sufficient knowledge of the practice area in which prescribing will take place
- A current Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check has been undertaken

- Assessment and decision- making for special risk groups including children, the elderly, pregnancy and breast feeding
- Influences on and psychology of prescribing
- Prescribing in a team context
- Clinical pharmacology, including the effects of co-morbidity
- Evidence based practice and clinical governance in relation to non medical prescribing
- Legal, policy and ethical aspects
- Professional accountability and responsibility
- Prescribing in the public health context
