Enhancing Neonatal Practice

Level 6

45 Credits

This module is designed for senior nurses and midwives working within neonatal practice. It promotes the development of advanced knowledge and skills which will enhance the care of neonates and families within their care.

The module enables the student to critically appraise their existing knowledge, critically reflect upon the role of the neonatal nurse within the multidisciplinary team and evaluate the means of providing holistic care to infants and families in the light of current evidence.

Due to the large practice component of the module, the student must be currently working within or be able to access a neonatal setting if required to do so to enable completion of the module learning outcomes. Managerial support should be sought and agreed prior to commencing the module to allow the student to undertake focused clinical practice as necessary.

Learning activities will take place through focused clinical practice and classroom teaching which might consist of lecture, debate, work - based discussion and simulation, supported by the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Assessment

A mentor will need to be identified prior to the start of the module to undertake assessment of the student in practice. Ideally the mentor should be an advanced neonatal nurse practitioner, but should certainly be a practitioner who is competent at and regularly practicing all of the learning outcomes.

Assessment consists of a practice portfolio, including demonstrating advanced skills, a 4000 word critically reflective paper on the role of the enhanced nurse practitioner, and a 2 hour unseen examination based around a clinical scenario of an acutely unwell neonate.
