Assessment is the cornerstone of effective Mental Health practice (Gamble and Brennan 2006). This view has been extended to a range of contemporary policy documents and Guidelines (Doh 2008, Doh 2010, WHO 2008). These indicate that all service users and carers should actively participate in the assessment of their needs in-order to inform their inclusion and participation (SCIE 2008).
Therefore mental health practitioners are required to engage with the principles of assessment as well as actual methods relating to their discipline and service area (Barker 2004). A critical appraisal of the practical application of a range of theoretical principles will enable practitioners to enhance their clinical reasoning.
This module will allow practitioners to explore and discuss the complexities of a variety of assessment strategies and techniques that are pertinent to their specialty and consider the application of their new knowledge within context of their own practice. Furthermore, students will be encouraged to utilise their own local and national policies, guidance and directives to support their academic enquiry.
