Prevention and Management of Leg Ulceration

Level 6

30 Credits

This module is intended to equip nurses with the knowledge and clinical skills required to assess and manage patients with leg ulceration. The part-time module consists of seven days in university and one day in clinical practice. Days in university will consist of delivery of the theoretical knowledge that underpins care of patients who have leg ulcers plus demonstration of the appropriate equipment and clinical skills. Although care provision for patients with leg ulcers has improved greatly and clinical research is growing, this topic remains a significant challenge for healthcare professionals.
The main challenges centre on an increasing elderly population, high leg ulcer recurrence rate, increasing prevalence of obesity and a mixed aetiology for some ulceration including lympho-venous problems.
At the duration of the module the student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate the pathology of venous & arterial leg ulcers
  • Differentiate, through assessment, between arterial and venous leg ulcers
  • Demonstrate the practical management of patients with leg ulcers
  • Critically discuss the prevention of recurrence of leg ulcers
Clinical Practice
Practical sessions are organised within the course to improve bandaging and Doppler skills. A skills competency inventory is provided to support the practice framework and this will also provide a focus for assessment of clinical skills in practice. The student will undertake practice visits in order to integrate theory into practice but is expected to gain experience in their place of work with a practice - assessor. The student will be assessed in Doppler technique by the module leader and bandaging skills by their practice assessor.

Assessment
A practice skills inventory and 3,000 word essay.
