This module offers those working in a range of mental health settings the opportunity to critically review the theory and practice of engaging service users and their carers in contemporary therapeutic interventions (WHO 2008). It is essential that interventions are timely, appropriate and responsive in order for service users and their carers to maximise the benefits and integrate outcomes into their ongoing inclusion and participation (DoH 2010).
Therefore a spectrum of interventions ranging from prevention to treatment to continuing development will be examined. Students will focus on interventions that are pertinent to their current area of practice in order to ensure that the learning experience is meaningful and transferable into practice arena.
Students will analyse how socially inclusive practice influences participation and the results of interventions. This will be further discussed in relation to how evidenced based practice can assist clinical decision-making (DoH 2008). A subjective and objective discussion will also be included regarding perceptions and measure of intervention outcomes. This will generate a critical understanding of the role, function and rationale for interventions and provide vital considerations for future practice.
