Intensive Care Nursing of the Critically Ill Child
Level 6
45 Credits
The module provides theoretical and practice learning opportunities to enable you to safely and independently manage the care of any critically ill child requiring level 2 care (Department of Health 1997) both in the paediatric intensive care environment, and outside e.g. during transfer. It also covers safely caring for any child needing level 3 care (Department of Health 1997) in the paediatric intensive care environment, with support from others in the multidisciplinary team. Because you are being prepared to safely and independently care for any child or young person aged under 18 requiring level 2 care in any setting, it is important that you have a range of clinical experiences in which skills can be developed. This will include a period of time in neonatal intensive care, and in another paediatric intensive care setting, with a different tertiary specialty to your normal place of work.
This means that you need to be flexible and that you will need the support of your clinical manager.
