Communication Skills in End of Life Care

Workshop summary
In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to reflect upon the importance of good communication in end of life care, to explore the theory of communication, to learn the necessary micro-skills.

Assessment
The workshop will take place in St Helena Hospice Education Centre, Colchester. The Hospice is a specialist palliative care unit with a full complement of specialist practice in the care and support of patients and families with incurable illness, the dying and bereaved.

Workshop content:
  • The core skills of warmth, genuineness and unconditional positive regard
  • Micro skills of communication
  • Communication skills required in end of life care assessments
  • Understanding and dealing with anger and distress in end of life care
  • Handling difficult issues including breaking bad news and collusion
  • Communication with colleagues

Recruitment and selection
All applicants must be a registered Healthcare Professional
or
meet patients with palliative care/supportive needs in their day to day activities.
